Off to Asturias next week to crew for my mate on an historical rally. Got a couple of days spare and transport. Trying to decide whether to take the road/gravel bike or the HT29er. So has anyone been there can offer some suggestions as to the best rides in the area, whether road, gravel, proper XC offroad, or any combination of them all? Big area and big ask I know. But this place never ceases to amaze with the breath of knowledge...

*tick*

cycled through the area many years ago (road) and would love to go back for some exploring. Cant help but think "gravel" would be the right bike for making the most of anything you find.

Road: Covadonga, San Glorio and Fuente De (last two from Potes).

Friend has just bought a hotel there to turn into a bike based business.

Potes and Fuente De are in Cantabria!

Los Lagos de Covadonga is the big one to do in the area, very famous climb. Check out stages 14 and 15 of this year's Vuelta for some ideas.

Haha..."Potes" is such a little fun town.

Yes - if you have some spare time: Potes! But ... as pointed out... - this is Cantabria!

Asturias / Cantabria: totally different biking in my opinion. Cantabria has these beautiful spots and great little villages, steep mountains. Very "green". Asturias is "endless". Type of bike vacation where you sleep under an tarp.

But for couple spare days "Potes" is fun indeed. But from there to the Picos: many tourists. The Picos near to Potes are very crowded in summer time!

Thanks for all the info so far. To be clear I will be based in the Gijon area so the NW side of the Picos would be the most accessible.

Does anyone have any idea/informaion about "la Garganta del Cares", the big gorge in the centre. I have read that is is forbidden to cycle the track but it seems it is OK to push a bike through ( 😉 ). I would love to do this track, either as part of a longer MTB route, or else I will just take an afternoon to walk it without the bike if it is too much hassle with rules and angry walkers.
