You have a 4hr window to go riding. Do you
A) Ride from the door for four hours at a relaxed pace.
B) Drive somewhere (45mins/1hr) more epic and ride hard over a shorter ride for 2hrs with accompanying faff of car and mud.
I can do 2hours of faff and two hours hardriding from the door.
You could do too if you put your mind to it.
B and get a van. Preferably one that drives like a car and doesn't embarrass the neighbour's or wife.
I do a bit of both for variety. So whatever floats your boat today.
lol I know it Josh. find shoes, lay out clothes, make a coffee, go for a no2, put on clothes, sort out drink, make toast, have another 2.. etc etc all of a sudden it's 8am and you got up at 6. 😆
Yesterday I rode from the door 'cos it's firm and frosty in the local woods.
Usually I'll drive 20 minutes to the local hill and ride for 3hrs.
I tend to work on the principle that you have to ride for at least twice as long as you're driving. So a) in the OP's case.
4 hours? No question. From the house. I'd only consider driving with more time than that.
Three hours of riding from home, in the middle of which you spend a nice hour in the pub with a pint by the fire. Obviously.
Personally there isn't great riding (that I've found) on my doorstep that I'd do on a weekend. Ok for a play on a pump track etc but that's it mostly.
I tend to drive somewhere more epic. Often hours drive, 2 hours riding, hour back. Often at stupid o clock in the morning so I get moaned at less by the wife. The weekend just gone I was at Cwmcarn by 7.30am!

I aim for this, but ultimately end up doing the reverse! I'd say it depends what you're in the mood for riding wise and then how far that is from you!

I rarely ride for more than 2 hours at a time anyway so I'd probably drive. But that would depend on how much better the riding is than I could do from home.

I'm struggling to find anything that exciting on my doorstep, so we usually drive up to 2 hours.
The search goes on, but my last effort was a muddy, unexciting wet trudge.
Whatever but never ask stw unless you want to be looked down on for either choice....
Make the trip to Cannock, The Forest or Gradbach. More rewarding and justifies the effort/faff
I'm looking at maps and calculating routes in my head and I get to the point where I know what I'm doing and going to but then I think about all the faff of the car and the worry that if the route takes longer than expected I'll get grief for being late. Trying to negotiate a further hour to make the drive more worthwhile. Think I'm headed to the White Peak for some road/track/bridleway action. Anyone know if the River Dove is cycleable from Hartington south?
