Yesterday i thought to do a small experiment in my local town centre, so i mounted a go pro to a hand powered bike and took to the streets.

The hand bike is part of a fleet of machines to enable local people who don't have good use of their legs and others with learning disabilities a way of get around town and along toe paths, etc. So i classed it alongside wheel chairs and mobility scooters, thus giving me the right to use it on pavements and in shopping precincts.

Also with the camera mounted at around knee height, it gave a child's eye view or perspective of travelling around town.

One thing i did notice was that people treated me like a wheelchair user, that's if they even saw me at all, as many people have little or no awareness beyond eye level.

This hand bike has 3 wheels, two at the rear one at the front, a seven speed nexus hub powers the front wheel, which also houses a coaster brake.
It's surprisingly stable, but with a little force it will go over on two wheels and you can hold it there for a good distance. This provided some concerning looks from peds as they thought i was going to tip it over.

A little video, sped up a touch for fun.

Can you try that down Oxford St and around the West End?

I'd pay good money to watch that. 😉

Elfin, it would be awesome, especially once i've fitted the chariot spikes to the wheels. 😈
