I remember reading a debate a while ago that suggested going for a ride first thing was a good idea to get the body going and aid weight loss. Only drinking water I think was mooted as the best way ?

I would like to shed half a stone and yes, I know eating less is the best/only way, but wondering if a few 45 min road rides first thing, now that weather is on the turn, could assist, rather than riding later in the day/evening

Shedding half a stone is **** all, you could do that in a week or two without riding at funny times of the day.

Just eat a bit less and do about 3 or 4 short hard rides per week.

I know a few people who just get up, have a coffee and ride. It works for them but whenever I've tried it I feel terrible.

Give it a go and see if you get on with it.

You'll certainly eat into your fat reserves if you go straight out without any food in the tanks - that is basically where the theory comes from. Some similar methods are used by the chaps I work for.

I did this over a summer uni break and it seemed to work well - lost about 15kg that summer! It's hard to motivate yourself to get out without any food though, often feels horrible.

All depends on what you have for breakfast afterwards.

Bowl of shreddies/shredded wheat/porridge is good. Sausage, Egg, bacon, beans, fried bread and mushrooms is bad.

IF you're talking a shortish ride, you shouldn't eat into (pardon the pun) your bodies natural glycogen stores built up over night, it will however get your metabolism going and set you up nicely for the day.

Eat less - move more is a sure fire way to drop some weight

Go for a 20-30 minute run instead. Much easier to put a pair of running shoes on at 6 in the morning, then it is to set up a bike. And you can run down a street half asleep and you wont die, you can't really do that on a bike.

a black coffee will help your body turn to fat rather than sugar for energy during the first 45 minutes .
but dont go out too long without food as you will feel unwell very quickly .

cheers. Running is a nono as my knees are ****ed for that. I am thinking of 30-45 mins at 630am - I can ride my cx bike straight out my garage door and be on the back roads within 5 mins so all shoud be fairly quiet.

Will give it a try this week coming...

when i was commuting i would get up ride the 13miles to work then eat. Seemed fine.

It wasn't planned, just couldn't face food that early.

i think i'm gonna do this in the morning. 5-6 mile mtb blast at about 7am should do the trick (it's relatively flat ground where i'll be riding though)...
