You don't need to be an 'investor' to invest in Singletrack: 6 days left: 95% of target - Find out more
I’m in Dublin for two weeks for work from the end of the week. Will have 1.5 days off and I’m thinking about trying to hire a bike to get some fresh air. Seen that you can get a bus (no car) from Dublin to Ballinastoe woods and hire a bike. Bus is an hour each way. Is the riding worth it?
Doesn’t have to be mtb, would also take road riding suggestions.
Also going to take my gym kit to keep me sane around two conferences.
You can probably ride to Ticknock aka 3-Rock. The waymarked trail is only 45 mins long but its good fun, you could happily do it a couple of times. There are also a bunch of other trails not on the official route (but I think are on Trailforks), though I haven't done them.
Ballinastoe is about 90 mins of riding, it starts off slow (fire road, first bit of singletrack is a bit lame) but gets better thereafter. A bit of missing signage so keep an eye on the map.
The two hours on the bus would kill it for me, I would recommend Ticknock.
Ticknock is good. Mostly singletrack with a bit of forest roads. Other cheeky bits in the trees if you keep an eye out. Also have a look at www.thegap.ie - van uplift bikepark not far away. The old 44b bus used to go to Glencullen nearby but do your own research, I might be out of date on that, grew up nearby but been in the UK too long.....
Ballinastoe has a few lovely descents, but more thrills at the bikepark.....
Suggestion hire a bit in Dublin and ride to Ticknock (I don’t have scope take a bike with me)? Thanks for the idea, will look it up.
As mentioned above, 44b bus route still runs to Glencullen but it's very infrequent. TheGap.ie is definitely worth a day out though uplifts don't run everyday. The cycle up is very easy though.
/me waves to feed
I love Ballinstoe, but there is shed loads more trails up 3 rock (plus Ballinstoe is a swamp if it rains). A loop is 55mins, there are enduro stages but you'll need strava to find the trailhead, wicklow way is ok up to djouce but be early doors to avoid walkers (they appear about 11).
The gap is a session palace, good fun but rock all views of dubs etc. Hire a bike from biking.Ie ticknoc and get up the top of the tarmac rd for peak district stylee xc stuff or use strava to find tech forest stuff
Depending on the day, madmtb might be doing an open beginner spin which will a pleasant 14km or so around some cheeky trails.
Thanks all. Looks like getting to Ticknock on public transport on a Sunday is a pta. I’ll keep looking into options but at the moment think I’m possibly making my life hard work.
Not really into uplift days at the moment. I’m just getting back into technical riding after a 2 year lay off for injury, so trails and xc more appealing.
