I posted last week asking for riding suggestions around the Camarthen area but it turns out that it's actually going to be Cwmbran we're going to as my other half managed to get the place names mixed up!
So....where's good to ride around Cwmbran?
I know that Cwmcarn isn't far and by the looks of it, Forest of Dean isn't too far either.
Where else is worth going to, preferably off-road but I might take the road bike in case the weather's not too good?
If you can get over to bike park wales, I'd thoroughly recommend it. Great trails, the push/ride up is a bit of a bugger but once you're up its great. You can go down half way and back up the fire roads so you don't have to push up all the way back. The new line (Terry's Belly) is fantastic. Good bike shop/cafe too. £6 for entry/parking. The uplift you have to book waaaay in advance so might be a bit late for that.
FoD is good. Verders trail (blue route) is a good rip around, not too climby. The red route has some steeper climbing sections in it if you wanted that sort of thing. Of course there's lots of DH lines if you wanted that stuff instead. Parking is 3 quid for the day. All the trails I know of start from the pedalabikeaway shop.
Cwmcarn is great too, starts off with a narrow technical(ish) climb up through pines with some switch backs, then some rocky sections and some great downhill bits. If you get the day right some of the views are brilliant. Parking is 3 is I think?
TBH its hard to knock the riding in Wales. Afan I didn't enjoy, it was for too long a drive for too little reward. The climb was good, but the downs are ruined by being bloody short and blocked off by stiles (to stop the MX bikes getting in) so you can't link it well. It doesn't flow.
