Lake District is half-way point for me and a friend to meet, so we've recently obtained the wife passes to have a weekend of biking in October. Neither of us know the Lake District at all, bar some walking about 20 years ago on my side.
Looking for recommendations on:
1) A couple of must-do epic rides in the area.
2) Where is best for camping? We'll have a car, so looking for (I guess, unless other recommendations?) a nice campsite strategically located near pubs and riding.
Coniston.
Bring waterproofs and woolies. Book a cottage.

Somewhere near Ambleside being central with many a good route. Biketreks for info etc.
Alternative to camping with good routes from the door step.

Wheelbase for bike spares and route info. Kentmere/Garburn Pass/Gatesgarth-Nan Beild.
Conniston?

Walna Scar and all things good in Grizdale Forest, Claife Hieghts, Hodge Close, Iron Keld and Tilberthwaite to name a few "classics"

As above, Ambleside-Coniston area gives most riding options for October. Around Keswick, the Borrowdale Bash + Tour of Skiddaw will feel pretty epic. Comfortable camping in Braithwaite, but the Coledale Inn is better than the Oak.
Grizedale campsite. Cheap, great riding straight from the site and a nice wee pub just along the road. Been twice now.
Thanks all for great suggestions!
You'll want somewhere you can burn things at night and rocky routes rideable in all weathers. Pub up the road with live music sometimes, no cafe though but Grizedale visitor center not too far away which can be ridden through on the many many bridleways in the area, so you can buy a better waterproof jacket & cake mid ride.
