This is the man who PERMANENTLY damaged his hands following this exercise, IIRC.
Couldn't straighten his fingers again!
DrP
Seen this before ,he was indeed nails.
Having once done 1000 over 7 days ,I cannot even start to get my head round that kinda mileage 😯
instagram gets everywhere.
* guy is a legend though.
been following 'him' on twitter.
Today was the day he got the record.
Got up to 75000 by the end of the year.
Amazing.
Quick Google search suggests he still about too at the ripe old age of 91.
Good man.
Lance armstrong could do that.
Same as Wwaswas, following "him" on twitter. Whenever I feel like not riding I just see how many miles he rode that day and that kind of forces me out, what a legend!
instagram gets everywhere.
😀 he even looks like a bit of a hipster: vintage bike, silly hat, skinny legs, impractical shoes. All he needs is some ironic facial hair.
Anyways, yes, respect to the man - wish he'd had a Strava account 🙂
My top vegetarian athlete
ha ha 'kin hipsters in their boat shoes!
Anyone know in the pic above ^ what the cable to the front hub is for?
Some type of speedo connection?
An amazing cycling record, respect.
I'd guess a dynamo for lights?

The link says he died aged 63....??
DrP
Said Tommy Godwin died aged 63 in 1975
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tommy_Godwin_(cyclist_born_1912)
The other Tommy Godwin (also cyclist), still alive was an London 2012 ambassador...
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tommy_Godwin_(cyclist_born_1920)
The former Godwin is indeed nails... he ultimately cycled 100,000 in 500 days?!?!
amazing! The article makes a slight error? in saying he's dead!
Anyone know in the pic above ^ what the cable to the front hub is for?
It's an old cable-driven mileometer - a little gear on the hub spins the cable, which then spins the counter on the handlebars.
There are two Tommy Godwins - one a track bloke from America, the other is this chap who died at 63.
The bloke is amazing, to 200 miles every day for 500 days is incredible, especially when you consider a) the bike he was riding and b) the lack of food at the time due to rationing. Properly inspiring stuff
on 21 June 1939 completed 361 mi (581 km) in 18 hours
20 miles an hour average for 18 hours? On a 30lb bike.
😯 😯 😯 😯 😯 😯 😯 😯
Looks like a 29er to me so he was kind of cheating really.
20 miles an hour average for 18 hours? On a 30lb bike.
With only FOUR gears!
😯
I'd guess a dynamo for lights?
It it not a calcium carbide lamp?
Edit: looks like it is too small for that and wrong shape
Front cable was milometer cable
I couldnt do that much in a car let alone a bike??
Front cable was milometer cable
That's what I said 🙂
Sorry Ben, I wrote the article and have researched Tommy for years. Just confirming your statement 🙂
In May 1940 after 500 days' riding he secured the 100,000-mile (160,000 km) record as well. Godwin dismounted and spent weeks learning how to walk before going to war in the RAF.
'core!

For info, on the exhibition ride page "New Alversford" doesn't exist, I guess you mean "New Alresford" which is between Winchester and Alton.
What did he die of?
I love the idea that he did that then went off to fight the war.
No offence to the young these days but you have no flecking idea. The stories my grandparents told me make me realise how lucky I am
Also follow 'him' on twitter-he undertook a fantastic achievement. Is it true his record will always stand due to the Guiness Book of Records stating to challenge it would be too dangerous? edit: oops, read linked site and it's there it came from!
