Can anyone suggest a good loop for an overnight trip in South Wales?
Ideally starting somewhere near the M4.
I will be riding with a mate and am looking for easily rideable non technical fire road type riding, with a remote spot for a bivvi.
Thanks.
How far?
Good question, I think about 40 miles round trip.
Whereabouts along the M4?
Anywhere really, just looking for a good scenic climb into some remoteness that my mate can ride on his rigid very heavy surly.
Anywhere in South Wales would be good.
Park crickhowell.
Bridleways up beacons way through mynydd ddu
Up near lord herefords knob
Drop down north scarp slope,
Bit of Rd, back up scarp slope heading south back down to crickhowell.
Plenty of wilderness for overnight, nice scenery etc.
Not done this route for 20 odd yrs due to being exiled in England.
Last rode on a rigid orange clockwork so ought to be ok for his surly (though our tolerance for lumps and bumps has changed in those 20 yrs), I’m gonna head up there next spring on my rigid longitude for an overnighted at some point.
Many thanks for that. I will get on the os maps and have a look.
Quite a bit of choice aro7nd there and crickhowell is a handy place to leave a vehicle.
There's a nice little bothy here Not sure if that's too far from the M4 for you...
Thanks for the info, I hadnt considered a bothy.
Previous attempts at navigation in that part of the world have had mixed results.
Just picking a bridleway or right of way from the map can often lead to extended hike a bike and or sodden feet.
My oppo is quite new to riding off road and I don’t want to put him off too much.
Why not figure something out from the map then go and ride it beforehand? You know your mate better than we do so should be able find something to suit. Not being condescending here BTW.
The nature of stuff outside trail centres is that you can get anything and everything! Some routes are fine early on in the year before all the nettles and brambles get going, some get boggy in winter or wet weather, etc.
