Morning All,

I'm looking for ideas for rides from our holiday base in Appleby next week.

This would take in North Pennines and Eastern Lakes.

Looking for 25-40km cross-country style days.

Any thoughts on trying to make a loop which would take in the Pennine Bridleway?

Thanks.

Eastwards look up or search on here for "high cup nick" routes, its pretty popular there is one bridleway up there to avoid I can't remember which one but have a search on here

Westwards you can ride on fairly flatish roads 15 miles (or just drive a bit) over to bampton/ askham up the cockpit to ullswater and the lakes is your oyster

wood fired pizza and beer hall at askham hall for lunch

I've had really good steak frites at the Punchbowl in Askham.

Pennine Bridleway is a bit of an out and back, or a bit of an epic from there, given current conditions. The BW across Wild Boar Fell is decent enough.

One idea, depending on wind direction is to use the train. Get dropped somewhere like Dent Station and make your way back to Appleby via Cam Fell, Hawes and the PBW, or vice versa.

There’s the awesome Bowderdale Classic from Crosby Ravensworth to Sedburgh and back; highly recommended if the weather is good. High Cup Nick and farm tracks round the Dufton area are also worth exploring. There’s some good tracks over the top of Cross Fell in the Alston / Garrigill area but you’re best getting an OS map and exploring; if it’s possible then get dropped off at the top and include descending Cross Fell in your journey. Your also only 40 minutes from Keswick; the Back of Skiddaw route is pretty fun.
Askham Fell / Loadpot Hill then down to Howtown is also definitely worth a look. Askham Hall for tea and cake 👍
