so, I must have tried nearly everything. Clif bars are nice, but too dense to eat, most gels are too goping for anything other than emergencies, sweeties are too sweet (well duh...) flapjack seems to explode into pieces in my pack before I even get to eat it...
what's your favourite? Let's have some home made recipes, forgotten gems, inspirations...
If you eat meat, try jerky as a savoury option. Or there is a salmon version available in some supermarkets, but the taste tends to linger...
Soreen lunchbox loaves are a current fave, the apple ones are particularly nice.
And I bought a box of Nakd Bakewell Tart bars, which are very pleasant too.

Kellogg peanut breakfast bars and Soreen tend to be my go too
Soreen, flap jack and mini pork pies
Torq gels, homemade flap jacks and sarnies for me.
A sandwich bag which contains 100g of salted peanuts, 100g sultanas, and 50g dark chocolate drops. Plus the odd Trek bar.

You're making it wrong Nick!
Can't remember if you're veggie or vegan but if the former then...
125g butter, 125g brown sugar, 2 or 3 big tablespoons of golden syrup, 250g oats. Melt together then bake for approx 20 mins @160 for soft flapjacks or 180 for crunchy flapjacks (your oven may vary!)
Skinned boiled new potatoes with olive oil, salt and parmesan wrapped in foil make great savoury snacks.
Love soreen and also peanut butter and jam sandwiches for sweet.
Pork pies and sticky flapjack. Fig rolls are good too.
Try the Veloforte bars
Excellent IMO and much better than anything else that l have tried
Another who struggles to eat. I use the Decathlon own Aptonia Iso+ carb powder. Then soreen, cereal bars and bananas.
Skinned boiled new potatoes with olive oil
You skin new potatoes?
malt loaf. loads of carbs, low fat, cheap, squashable and waterproof.
Banana plus a glass of water ~30mins before heading out, then if I'm planning to be out more than ~90mins, a Sainburys jelly baby (only because they're the cheapest I know of at 85p for a 225g bag) roughly every ~10mins after being on the road ~1 hour.
Had the banana well over an hour ago, but just like all weekend, I feel mentally drained and indecisive on how far and where to go... Been too used to jumping on the turbo trainer for no more than 90mins (but typically under 60mins) since November, which in the real world will only get me to around Warnford having climbed one cat4 hill, the prospect of doing a 40+ mile ride over 2.5+ hours feels stupidly daunting right now considering I did 41 rides of 41+ miles (Eddington number) last year according to Veloviewer. :/
We’ve gone off using gels and ‘energy bars’ except for emergencies so most rides require an assortment from the below
German cheese sausage, or Italian garlic sausage cut up into chunks.
Cheese and pickle mini rolls
Poundshop jelly beans
Pork pies
Fig rolls
Pressed fruit bars
Cheese sausage? Tell me more! That sounds amazing!
I've just remembered that someone asked me to marry her after I produced flapjack from my bag on a ride 🙂
been resorting to the guava paste energy (sugar) cubes -- quite sweet, but extured enough - and solid enough you don't need to consume it all at once -- Lucho Dillitos - https://www.wiggle.co.uk/lucho-dillitos-colombian-bocadillo-guava-energy-bar-27x40g/
I tried this recipe recently and was impressed with the ratio of faff to tastiness/actual useful energy on a ride. Plus they worked well after being frozen and defrosted so you don't have to eat the whole batch in one go (as is easily done...).
MELT:⠀
🥥2 Tbsp coconut oil ⠀
🐻2 Tbsp brown sugar or coconut sugar⠀
🍯 1/3 cup honey ⠀
🥜 3/4 cup natural peanut butter ⠀
⠀
Melt on a low heat, stirring occasionally. Cool for a few minutes before mixing in with your dry goods: ⠀
⠀
MIX:⠀
🍚 2 cups oats ⠀
🥜 1/2 cup salted peanuts ⠀
🍫 1/2 cup dark chocolate ⠀
🥥 1/3 cup dessicated coconut ⠀
⠀
Mix together. Press into a baking tray and refrigerate for an hour. Cut, foil and throw in the freezer to be consumed when required!
Got it from Instagram hence the cup based measurements.
I got kinda of fed up with spending loads on bars etc.
I came across this recipe which is actually pretty simple.
Hopefully I'm OK to share the URL
Obviously no credit taken and I doth my cap to the creator as I think these a damn fine!

Moonvalley bars, love the apple and cinnamon. Them or Torq pineapple & ginger.
Mashed sweet potato wraps with cheese, chilli, lettuce. Go heavy on the chilli, you will thank yourself.
Wow, there's some amazing stuff here, I need to seriously up my ride food game!
Si, thanks for that flapjack recipe, that sounds just the basic stuff I need, def going to try those no bake apple cinnamon ones as well.
Keep them coming
Can tell you for sure that boiled egg (amongst other things) and home made celery-cucumber-apple juice is not very helpful in a six hour race around Stanmer park on one of the hottest days of the year.
Grated carrot. Peanut butter.
Add flavours to taste... Jalepenos scirracha and ciriander leaf.
Wrap in swall wraps.
The cartot makes the peanut butter not claggy.
I love them
You skin new potatoes?
Boil them then put them straight in cold water and you can peel off the skin. It makes them really easy to eat and digest on the go.

I’ve just remembered that someone asked me to marry her after I produced flapjack from my bag on a ride 🙂
Just think of the reaction if you'd been able to whip out a cheese sausage!
Used to do the whole gel/protein bar thing, now I think unless you’re in a race situation they’re really not necessary! (Sometimes put a bit of electrolyte/carb mix in bottles though if it’s hot & a long ride). Normally just stick bananas/screen in my back pockets. If I’ve been organised & gone shopping the day before I might have some pork pies, fruit/nut mix etc. Anything energy dense really! If it’s a long ride I might try & schedule a stop at a nice village bakery/butchers etc to resupply (or co-op etc for a ginsters if no other choice!) If on a long ride with mates we’ll always stop at a cafe etc for a proper lunch.
If I’m ravenous at the end of a ride it’s a sign I haven’t fuelled correctly!
Usual malt loaf, bananas, cereal bars.
But also,
toasted tortilla wrap with spinach, cheese, black beans and Cajun chicken spice, slat and pepper.
Usually a nice cheese sarnie if we're going to be out for a while otherwise one of those squidgy bars from Lidl, the orange and cacao ones taste so much like the proper chocolate oranges it's unreal (also have the benefit of no palm oil in them but the wrappers can't be recycled :/)
pleased to see that malt loaf is up there....no artisanal products here though mrs antigee does something with sunflower seeds and ground almonds that looks a bit like the bottom of a birdcage...a vote for chocolate sultanas

I've also made these and have one an hour:
Banana soreen squashed flat and cut into soldiers ftw. Currently trialling aldinio Scottish rough oat cakes and they seem to do the job if a little dry. The stem ginger oat biscuits are lush. Also use a cashew and jelly baby mix for salt intake.
Quaker oats little square bars are OK but do not believe the advertised amount of oats. Ti's a little white lie.
Mini tortilla wraps, with peanut butter and cherry jam.
Roasted sweet potato wedges.
Yum.
Torq gels ,flap jack , fig rolls, not soft kiwi 🥝 & nairns oat cakes.
I now favour a cheese&tomato sanger as the pickle can repeat with the gels!
For loooong rides I will definitely have pork pies & mini cheddars.
Nom.
I was looking at my chocolate chip brioche today and thinking it'd be good ride food. It's about £1.50 for 8, they keep forever and provide 100 calories each in about 20g of carbohydrate. I just need to find a way to hang the bags from my head tube, maybe small hooks?
Just think of the reaction if you’d been able to whip out a cheese sausage!
Sausage cheese, on the other hand, doesn't sound as appealing! 😁
+1 for fig rolls and soreen (or 'squishy cakes', as my kids call them).
