Forgive me if this has been discussed before - I had a quick search but found nothing. Got a strange problem with my 170mm Reverb Stealth not reaching full travel (old remote, bought mid summer 2017).

It's been a bit slow and sticky since getting it out of storage after winter, felt like the seat clamp was done up too tight (but definitely wasn't, I tested) especially when compressing it - had to be sure to push my weight directly along its axis to make it compress smoothly ie. not put my weight on the nose of the saddle. No big deal I thought, I'll give it a bleed sometime soon an maybe check/lub the bushings under the top cap.

...until today's ride, all OK until the end of the final big descent, pushed the remote and it extended slower than usual then topped out audibly and visually about 50mm short of the full 170mm extension. I can pull up the remaining travel (no matter if the button is pressed or not) and it tops out audibly at 170mm but then drops back 50mm with a clunk if I put any weight on it. At full compression it looks like it's compressing more than usual also - see photo.

It's still within warranty but if I can try a home fix I will. I have some suspicions of some sort of mechanical failure that might be obvious when I pull the post out of the frame, but will try a bleed tonight if nothing looks amiss before contacting the shop I bought it from.

In the meantime, I'd appreciate some knowledge if anyone has seen this before. Thanks.

If under warranty send it back, rather than waste time fiddling & potentially damaging it voiding your warranty.

Remove it from the frame, I bet the lower circlip has rotted away and failed. Will be held in position by the hose.

As above, broken circlip. Send it back under warranty. See if you can find the bits of broken circlip in the frame, they seem to just magically vanish into thin air.

Just pulled it out for a look - failed circlip indeed. I'll remove the post later and see if I can shake out the circlip. Bought less than two years ago from Chain Reaction so should be a straightforward warranty job.

Not exactly looking forward to going back to an oldschool post in the meantime but at least it's early season still here!

Cheers.

When mine failed, I replaced it with a Brand X one from CRC. I now have the Reverb as a spare. Brand X works just as well, is cheaper, and don't seem to have the problems of the Reverbs.
