After a few hours in the shed looking through parts, I came up with this to save the "good" bikes from the winter filth.
Not sure what I'm going to do with it yet, but Reading to London along the Thames is on the list.

Quite pleased with it if I'm honest.

Looks great, but maybe a bit long? Might just be the pic?

That should upset some people.
Personally I love it*.
*with a shorter stem.
Reminds me of this thing I built back in 08. 😛

The front end looks long but it's the angle.

I need to do a test ride as the gearing may need some tweaks. I'll just have to see.

That looks spot on mate. You've ended up with a riding position similar to a tourer/CX bike, yet with front suspension and rugged tyres - sounds perfect to me.

And I think the stem length is just fine for drop bars. Talking of which, you've got the angle of the bars and levers set just right.

It's certainly not a new idea what you've done, so you don't need to bother giving it a name like 'Gravelbike' 😉

Some on here will want to burn you at the stake for even suggesting you shouldn't ride your good bikes during the Winter! lol

(Im doing the same, building up a "Winter" bike with bits I already mostly have but on a new budget frame.)

P.S. Your ride looks good!!

It's around 20mm shorter than my road bike but with a bunch less drop ( didn't measure it )

Can you get a layback post for it, and some bar tape the same colour as the frame whilst you're at it.

I like the long stem, stretch you out a bit like a proper roadie when in the drops.

I hazard a guess that when you ride it, you'll get in the drops and flat chat it everywhere 😉

Brilliant that...

I need to ride it before I change the seatpost. The saddle is as far back as I can get it so It may need another 15/20mm.
The search for the bar tape is already on 🙂

That looks bloody excellent!

Needs skinwalls, obviously, but otherwise, that looks a whole heap of fun!

I knocked this up the other week - it's my old 1992 Kona Fire Mountain with a set of Cowbells and bar end shifters. Did a 15 mile bimble on it this morning. More by luck than judgement it all seems to work.

Looks gert nice that.

Is the lack of bar tape to avoid lead poisoning?

You've knocked that up from spares?
Hopefully you have a massive smug grin everytime you go out!

Took it for a quick spin today. I need to make a few small changes but it rides really well.
Probably need a tad more pressure in the fork and still undecided on gearing.

Blue or yellow bar tape , that is the question.

Black is the answer! Great bike, wish they made that now instead of the slate.

I think one of the Cannondale XC WC team a few years back (long before 29ers were a serious thing) having a set of standard disc hubs with road rims and tyres set up so they could ride warmup on their race bike, rather than bringing a road bike and their XC bike to a race.

Which is a long winded way of saying: you might also want to try a pair of 29er wheels with 'cross tyres in there, because they might well fit.

Fond memories of setting up a KHS team in 1998 with P2s, Dura Ace bar en shifters, drop bars and skinny Michelin 26" knobbly on the back and the thinnest Ritchey Z Max I could find on the front. I used to ride it to and from work - and seem to remember it being a jolly harsh ride. Maybe keep the fat 26", in retrospect. 😉

Great post, thanks for that. My using kenda klimax 345gram tyres which are 1.9 but come up closer to a 1.75.
I'll try some fatter 2.3 if the ride is harsh - sooooo many options and loads of clearance to play with.

I wish my shed was as well stocked as yours! I do have a spare roll of bar tap though 😀

I like it btw.

Bar tape shall be black, and Lizard Skins.

Hey, don't blame me! I just make the rules!
