Just doing some cleaning up of the left over crimbo drinks and browsing the local classifieds and, because I seem to have no self control left, I just purchased these two little lovelies.....

The Pine mountain I have a mind to ss and do some horrible sort of drop bar thing to, that purple stem is staying though.... The Nakamura I don't know, it's Tange prestige and full XT...and....and.... It looks nice right?!?!

They were around 50 quid each....

Show me some of your little retro steel beauties and tell me I did a good thing..... The wife is going to kill me...

My LBS has a 93ish Marin TT with Hope Tis, Paul's cantis, Goldtec stem, Pace bars etc that's been uncollected after a service....

I've got dibs on it!

They're lovely.

Bargain 🙂

Suggested conversation with wife - "Remember how you liked that bike at <name a location/time>, well I searched high and low, and now I have found you one"

If it works, let me know, because I've never quite managed to pull it off - might be my technique...

Nice, I did a similar thing yesterday, not quite as retro but I couldn't resist a Cove Stiffee frame on eBay. Looking forward to building it up.

I found this local to me on eBay in the summer. Will be my Dad bike.

£60! The guy had bought it in the early 90's hardly used it!

That Specialized above is lovely.....

I had a Saracen Kili comp back in the early 90's, whether it rode well or not I can't remember but I don't think any bike since has been through so much or been as enjoyable..... That was a pure utility bike, my only form of transport (and one I could use under the influence of whatever....)

There is a bike shop here in Leipzig called ‘Fahrrad Ossi’. The owner is a bit of a local legend and only runs the shop as a bit of a hobby. The shop is really an Alladin‘s Cave of retro bikes. He’s got several Kuwahara bikes on display but if you offer to buy any of them he’ll throw you out of his shop.😳

Nice find. Makes me hanker after my 1990 team Marin. Tange prestige frame, XT groupset, zolatone paint and magenta stem, bars and forks.

What I consider my first real mountain bike after Dawes and MBK.

Really wish I'd kept hold if mine. That catalogue was thumbed to death and then some, even after I'd worked my socks off to buy the bike.

I’m a bit of a retro addict, currently wondering how I can get the early 90’s Saracen Kili Flyer with Middleburns I agreed to buy for £20 back home.

Bit of advice if you’re buying a retro. Don’t try to make them into a modern bike. I’ve tried wider riser bars and suspension forks on my Kona plus other stuff and it just doesn’t feel right.
Some people have modified old steel frames with disc mounts and that’s probably worth it but it’s an expensive journey.
Anything which changes the geometry tends to mess things up. I’ve got some 640mm bars on my Kona and a slightly shorter (but still a Velocity) stem and that help with the front end control but after trying other things I have reverted back to just those changes.
Just enjoy the bikes as they are, a lot of them (Kona especially hence why they are expensive now) ride really well.

retro thread

I love retrobikes and have an old 1992 marin in purple and green. Added v brakes to it.

Got it for 10 pounds from the tip and spent another 60 pounds on it.

Whats a Nakamura?

Hadrians wall yesterday...

The Bontrager I've just finished a bare frame restoration of and its a lovely riding thing. The rockhopper is my partners and has just been turned into touring spec (rigid fork, new XT triple transmission, nimbus tyres) for an upcoming trip to the outer hebrides

Early 90's Diamond Back Ascent here - had it since new. Great bike, and even did Snowdon on it !

I still use it and it had a respray over 15 years ago - similar blue to Slackboy's Spesh.

"whats a Nakamura?"

They are the Canadian equivalent of Muddy Fox. Used to make nice bikes and now make stuff like this:

Am pretty sure I drove past someone on a Scott Vertex today, complete with child on child seat (Wirral).
Very jealous! (Of bike, not children)

Love an old Marin - I have an '89 Bear Valley with a few upgraded bits. That Pine looks great.

Bought this before Christmas and it rides great - really quite compliant, but a pretty racy position. It's amazing what you can get for peanuts.

Early 90’s Spesh bikes are legendary for being indestructible touring bikes. I converted my Kona to a touring bike for a couple of tours and it was brilliant, so much so that when I bought a “proper” tourer it really wasn’t that much different.
