Sorry for the pict quality. My boss wants to pay me to service his run around HT - Needs a bit of TLC but otherwise sounds (except for the seized seat post 😉 ) Some old Biopace stuff on it as well !!

Thought it was circa 1995?

Much older than 95 - biopace! Late 80s/early 90s I reckon.

That's one of those elderly bicycles that makes you think "Wow. Modern bikes are indeed pretty cool". 😀

Nice to see.

1990 I think, the downgrade to plastic components was not welcome at the time.

http://datenbanken.freepage.de/traut/SHIMANO.html

This suggests 1992 at the latest (last year of Shimano Exage LX 400

Oh aye that font on the TT may have been a bit later than 1990.

How much would you ask ya boss for labour?

I reckon prob take me about 1 - 2 hours to clean & degrease, check BB & Hubs, replace cables (inner & outer), replace tyre, try and unsieze seat tube and replace QR? £30?

My mate had the exact same model, bought it in early 91 IIRC.

I bought one of these from Harry Halls in 2001:

[img] [/img]

Last year of the steel ones. They sold them alongside those newfangled alloy ones.

Still use it now as a tourer, with rack, panniers and rigid P2's.
It's a brilliant bike, the frame is superb.
The cranks flex a bit though, and the original bar and stem weighed a ton. 🙂

I've kept all the original bits, apart from the QR's, which broke, and the pedals, which my partners' daughter now uses on her much later alloy Rockhopper.

They are the alloy Strongarm cranks - I had those on my 1998 (A1 Comp FS) - one of those new fangled alu ones 🙂

I had the Manitou Spyder R - Elastomer - Shocking (no pun intended) - They had plasic internals which I snapped in 3 months of use - sold em after Warranty then bout some Bomber Z3's in a sale - Couldn't believe the difference 🙂

...good luck finding new biopace chainrings 🙂 we had a similar vintage r'hopper in with a circular middle ring mixed with the biopace inner and outer, (fitted by a previous owner) it sort of worked

The chainrings are still spot on I think - not done a lot of off road - more of a long term shopper / quick trip / pub bike 🙂

I had an old Rockhopper like that it was awesome, I had it pinched and replaced it with a 2001 A1 FS (Judy XC fork which was amazing at the time I thought)

Still riding the frame although the other bits are very different, love this frame so much.

Cleaned and services mechanicals last night - just need to cable up but I have to say it must have been oiled and no been out in the rain as it is emaculate apart from some scratches in the forks and chainstay 😯
