I'm in the process of converting a 1970s Raleigh Royale and have decided to replace the original 27" wheels with 700cs.

The 700Cs are a few mm smaller and so the drop on the original brakes isn't enough. Any recommendations on a really long drop brake?

Also am I going to need to cut the canti bosses off the forks to get a modern brake to fit??

I think I have the brakes you need. Let me check the spares bin to see if still there..

How deep is the drop? Longer reach brakes tend to be about 57mm max, but I know Tektro do some very long drop ones up to 73mm ( https://www.sjscycles.co.uk/brakes/black-tektro-r559-caliper-brake-5573-mm-very-deep-drop-nut-fitting/)

Confused about the question of the canti blocks - is the fork set up for caliper brakes or cantilever?

Got a pair of Alongha extra deep drop. About 70 mm and dual pivot. They are only £20 a pair.

Thanks, folks.

Drop appears to be of the order of 60-70mm, so either those Tektros or Allonghas should work.

In terms of the set-up, the fork has both canti bosses on the fork legs and a hole at the top of the fork. Presume that means fitting calipers should be fine and that they won't foul on the bosses?

I'm not sure how setup on the rear is supposed to work though. The seat stays have canti bosses but the cross-bar (?) connecting the seat stays doesn't have a hole. Do I just need to carefully drill a hole to be able to fit calipers?

Sorry if that makes no sense - I'm not very good on these retro projects!

Sounds like the frame is setup for cantis. The hole at the top of the forks could just be for a light.

Suspected I'm being a numpty here. Yes, I think the frame and fork were originally set up for cantis.

Essentially, I'm wondering what to replace them with that will actually brake a bit better?

I thought I had read online that a conversion to calipers was possible but might require some drilling and some long drop brakes.

Are there any other options. Can I replace with V-brakes instead?

You are still going to have the same problem.

The canti bosses are in the wrong place for 700c wheels.

The hole on the fork is for a mudguard. The lights on a raleigh would probably have been mounted on a fork leg boss or on a quilstem washer/bracket. Odd the back doesn't have one though.

Drum brakes or hack off the bosses if they get in the way of the loooong drop callipers?

Also are they actually canti bosses or are they mafac brake mounts?
