So, just been out for a quick road spin and could do with the collectives opinions before I decide to do anything about them.

Case 1 - Some fat ****er in a red Corsa pulled out on me (from my right) on a rather swift stretch of downhill.

Bit pissed off but let it go, it's not the first time it's happened down there. Then he indicates left leaving me nowhere to go but around the outside of him, that kinda got my back up and I give him the "****ing arsehole" as I pass and carry on my way.

So less than two minutes later he reappears alongside look across at me, I look back and say "yes you". He pulls over, gets out and grabs me around the neck asking me if I "want my ****ing neck broke". He holds me like that for a while with me answering "of course not" each time.

Eventually he leaves with me telling him exactly why I was pissed with him.

Got his car reg and all that, know the road he pulled out from (think it's a cul-de-sac so he may live up there).

Case 2 - I just hit a a familiar segment on Strava on which I was second. Lead spot taken up by someone I kinda know (friends gaffer).

I get a lovely draft off a passing bus which I reckon may well have taken the KoM.

Sort of feels like cheating, do I crop the GPS?!

Case 1 - report to the police, definitely.

I wouldn't report case 2 to the police if I was you.

I can't think why you're wasting time asking whether you should report an assault though, when you could be already talking to the police.

Report Case 1 to police with all details of the car reg. etc. but without independent witnesses I doubt it'll go any further.

Case 2: the roads are for passage from A to B, not race tracks; concentrate on the traffic around you rather than being faster than everyone else and that way you may avoid road rage incidents... 😉

Yes, report the corsa driver

However:

on a rather swift stretch of downhill.
I get a lovely draft off a passing bus which I reckon may well have taken the KoM

sounds a teeny tiny bit like you're taking a few too many chances on busy roads - of course that may be unfair

If you're sure you're not, carry on

strava - meh. Eventual KoM will have a 30mph following wind anyway

Should point out that case 1 is not directly linked to case 2!

You really need to go to the police with case 1...it could be worse for someone else next time! Bloke sounds like a Nut job with issues against cyclists! Report!

As for Strava i know people who only ride when wind assisted just to have the chance to get KOM's So would say your well within your rights not to edit the segment!

eh? Are we trying to justify the actions of the driver in anyway here?

Guy needs reported without doubt.

Why don't people lamp these 'fat ****s'? How on earth can people let themselves be manhandled like this? I'd have gone all a bit unnecessary*
Not suite the old bill will do anything at all if you've not got the reg though.

Report to police there is an aggressive nutter on the road who nearly kills folk then chases them down in order to assault them
No offence but why are you asking?

Why did you let him keep hold of you a knee on the bollox would have sorted that?.After all you provoked him(doesnt give him the right to assault you though ) so you need to be man enough to deal with the outcome

He was a lot bigger than me and I was wearing cycling shoes!

Junkyard, just getting some opinions whilst I calmed down a bit.

This has no reflection on the OP but a LOT of drivers have no real perception of the speed that cyclists can achieve. I'm sure a lot of them assume cyclists just pootle along and have no idea at all that a fit, regular cyclist can be moving at 20-odd mph and often a lot faster with gradient on their side.

Since you know where he lives, take him a present of some paint stripper or brake fluid. Leave it on the roof of the car though

Then report it

m0rk, tempting as it is I think that might get me in trouble 😀

Asterix, you're right. For clarity, whilst it was downhill stretch I certainly wasn't "giving it the beans" and it wasn't a segment, sorry if that muddied the water.

West Mids finest are paying a visit tomorrow for a statement.

And relax...

Case 1: as most above have stated report to the Police...however often others do things that may upset us (in fact it happens all the time) but you need to learn to respond better, you need to understand anger fuels anger...he made you anger so you became the aggressor (yes hurling abuse and obscenities is aggressive) what were you expecting ??? The guy to come over and apologise ???

In future either bite your tongue or realise an aggressive act will lead others to retaliate with further aggression...not saying for a minute the guy is in the right or was not in the wrong for pulling out on you but YOU could have avoided the confrontation situation!

I guess I wanted him to realise what he did, as mentioned earlier some drivers just aren't aware.

Well actually, a sensible thing for anyone to do is apologise if someone else is yelling at them. It often defuses the tension, you can make friends with the aggressor and possibly they might realise they were being a ****. Telling them they are a **** has proven time after time to be not effective in any way.

Maybe CTC (or similar) membership should include self defence classes.

If anyone had done that to me they would be lying on the floor in a bad way in a couple of seconds. I hate bullies and violent people. Then I'd have to administer bloomin first aid I guess though 🙄

Sorry Toys, are you saying I should have apologised for calling him an arsehole earlier...whilst he's throttling me and asking if I want my neck broke?

Yep. Police for sure.

Sounds like Road rage and common assault to me. In my experience they will take that seriously with out witnesses.

Haze - yep. Apologise. Diffuses tension and removes you from danger. Same advice goes to your adversary. It is the first step on the road to making peace and harmony.

Why did you stop cycling when an aggressive man pulls over to 'speak' to you?

Good point jekkyl, he had stopped in front of me and I was going to have a quick word through the driver side window when he threw me by getting out.

Wasn't really sure what to expect to be honest, though in hindsight it was never going to end well considering he'd turned around and chased me down.

you did it wrong its extremely easy to batter someone while they are in or trying to get out of a car, every time i see these threads i'm amazed how passive you people seem to be, if some one is trying to get out of their car they're doing it to have a go at you so retaliate in advance. oh and a top tip, if the opportunity arises grab the keys out of the ignition and throw them in a bush/pond/drain etc. to lessen the chance of vanquished foe trying to run you over a few miles down the road.

Why not just shoot them on the off-chance they might give you a slap?

if the opportunity arises grab the keys out of the ignition

Aggravate them - good idea. Ever actually done this?

i'm amazed how passive you people seem to be

Many people aren't all that aggressive.

West Mids finest are paying a visit tomorrow for a statement.

Hahaha, good luck with that. Which part if the West Midlands, out of interest? I can confirm that Solihull are useless, and Birmingham East or South was the team responsible for the case in the "road rage assault" thread. Someone on that thread reported something to west Mercia who said that they'd have investigated it but as the incident took place just inside the west mids area they wouldn't bother passing it on because they knew west mids wouldn't do anything.

Possibly so he wouldn't then get run over if he carried on?

I'd stop but not for the same reasons the OP.
