What are my options??
The chain - cassette and chairings are worn out so Im deciding what to do.
I dont know a great deal about road bike equipment but I think its all Tiagra stuff. I have noticed that most drivetrain bits for sale are all 10 or 11 speed. I have all but ruled out moving to 10sp due to the high cost of the shifter/brake - levers. I wouldnt mind upgrading my chainset though as this is quite a low spec non Tiagra piece. Im assuming I will need a 9 speed chainset or will a 10sp one work - do they run different chains?
Is there anywhere I can buy 9sp stuff on the cheap or will I pay more than for 10sp ??
10sp Tiagra chainset will be fine
Merlin had some v cheap ones recently
had a look at groupsets?
could be cheaper to go 10sp than buy casette, chain & chainset.
Yep, you can fit whatever cranks you what - Dura Ace 11 speed if you wanted.
Tiagra are perfectly decent, check the German shops too.
thomthumb - where did you see the groupsets
IME the german shops (buying everything individualy) are often cheeper than even merlin (who are usualy cheepest) do the groupsets for.
Unless your shifters are goosed I'd just get a new chain and cassette, (and a whole chainset is often cheeper than chainrings if they're worn). Then repalce the inner and outer cables 9including the brakes), new brake pads and treat it to some expensive (lizard skins DSP is ace) new bar tape for that new bike feeling. All that will still be cheeper than new shifters.
That's pretty much what I did with my 'old' DA7800 kit, once it's worn out I might get ultegra Di2 11 speed (assuming that's penciled in for next year which seems logical).
If 10sp chainsets can be run with 9sp cassettes why are there 9sp and 10sp chains?
Are they really compatable and if so which chain do I need?
10s is narrower, so the chainrings on 10s chainsets will be slightly narrower. I've not heard of anyone running 9s chainrings and 10s chain ahving any problems though.
The chain/cassette/shifter speeds need to match though.
If 10sp chainsets can be run with 9sp cassettes why are there 9sp and 10sp chains?
Because the cassette sprockets are closer together.
You can run a 10 speed chain on a 9 speed transmission, but not vice versa.
thomthumb - where did you see the groupsets
merlin or germany.
ok thanks everyone-
just for clarification - this combination is ok then.......
10sp chainset
10sp chain
9sp everything else
??
It is, but there's no advantage (other than a minuscule weight one) to using a 10 speed chain, so I'd go 9 speed chain/everything else, 10 speed chainset.
right I promise this is my last question on this topic.....
I found this on CRC which appears to be a single right handed, 10 speed lever for just over £50. Would I be right in thinking that this coupled with 10sp chainset, chain and cassette would be enough to convert to 10 speed gearing??

Correct.
There will be a slew of people saying you need a new rear mech, but that's only on the MTB, on the road they're the same. Tempted myself to upgrade my winter bike so I can swap my PowerTap over more easily!
excellent news - the only problem i could think of with the rear mech was the jockey wheels - but since these are worn out anyway I will just replace with 10sp ones.
does anyone know which jockey wheels are compatable with 105??
CRC seams to stock anything but - but im guessing most of them will work?? Im after the cheapest ones really
