Replacing old impact pros

I'm looking to replace my old, and much loved Impact Pros (Yes, I will get round to posting a picture in that thread).

I love the grip of the sole and how they make my feet feel safe. So, I was just going to replace them with new ones. Unfortunately, they aren't available in my size in a price I'm prepared to pay at the moment (£140 is just too rich for me).

So I'm looking at alternatives. What would you recommend that matches the grip & robustness of the impact pros?

Are the Freerider Pros robust enough or do they feel flimsy?

Are the Specialized shoes grippy enough?

Is there something out of leftfield that I haven't considered?

I've a pair of 2f0 roosts and they are very good but this is coming from someone who until about 18 months ago just used old trainers to go out in.

In short I've nothing to really compare them to but so far they have been great.

I have just swapped to Ride concept shoes. These from Tredz, https://www.tredz.co.uk/.Ride-Concepts-Hellion-Elite-MTB-Shoes_235700.htm their £48.99 and if you hang around long enough they give you a discount voucher. The sizing seem to be correct and have a spacious toe box. Grip wise their almost on par with 5 ten freerider pros. Plus Quidco

How on earth did I miss that? I could have sworn I looked at Evans. 🤦.

Does anyone have experience of the mids? They look like they might be a good choice for winter, but might be a bit restricted in ankle movement?

Edit: they're actually £48: https://www.evanscycles.com/brand/five-ten/impact-pro-mid-mountain-bike-shoes-140092

Yeah, the Impacts are a massive sponge. The Pros are a very different beast: slimmer, lighter and less absorbant.

+1 for the Ride Concepts.

Not quite as sticky as 5:10s but close enough, and they are much more durable. The Hellion is a sturdy shoe, closer to Impact Pro than Freerider Pro.

I find my freeriders too flexible/bendy now after switching to Ion Scrubs (I think). A lot tougher shoe and the sole lasts way longer. Don't feel I lose that much grip compared to the 5-10.

Those Ride Concepts are good as well. I need them to do a 9.5 tho.

Great deal 😎 been after some replacement mid flats for a while.

My old Teva mids have finally died ☹️

Ah yeah, had forgotten they'd eventually settled on something a bit more sensible

Have you considered Trailcross GTX?

Out of the 5 pairs of five tens I own, they are the most sticky for some reason - maybe the black sole?

D30 ankle protection, but no toe protection

I found Freeriders too flimsy in both the soul and uppers for my taste. I’ve also switched to Specialized. The DH are closer to the impact than the Roost and both dry out overnight. Sole is at least as grippy as 5:10 compound but wears more quickly.

They come up really small BTW.

I'm 9.5 in most shoes and take 11 in RC, though 10.5 would probably be better.

Worth a punt?

Do Impact Pros size up similar to Freerider Pros?

Or more like standard Freeriders?

I’m in the same size in Impacts as Freerider pros. My 2020 purchases freerider pros are a bit sorry for themselves in the sole department now so picked up some bargain Evans Impact Sam Hills. They are a chunk heavier than the freerider pros but the grip seems good so I’m happy for the cheap price I paid for them (think £52). Would have just been buying a new pair of pros but they weren’t nearly as cheap unless you wanted the pink booby ones.

In terms of comparison between the 2 I think the grip is similar - the impacts feel stiffer in the sole and like they’ll survive a toe / tree interface a bit better. The freeriders are a chunk lighter and nicer to wear off the bike and aren’t quite so ‘special’ looking.
Not got the impacts properly wet yet to compare - but the freerider pros defo dry out a lot quicker than the standard freerider elements. I think the impacts are built more like the elements than the pros.
So if you can get a freerider pro for a good price then definitely do it.

edit - just don’t be tempted by the freerider pro prime blue - the sole looks the same and they had a similar rrp but it’s crap. Looks identical but it’s made of a harder rubber and I found I was getting bounced off the pedals more - even in the dry. Freerider pros with the proper sole and the impacts are both much grippier.

Hmmm, I'm already a size or so up from my normal in Freerider Pros (10.5).

What's your size in shoes generally please?

We probably have similar sizes, and mine is mostly 9.5 and sometimes 10. Also have a pair of Freerider EPS at 10.5 but that's sized up for waterproof socks, while the impact and freerider Pros only have rooms for normal socks.
