My M780 XT Rear mech has almost reached the end of its working life after 12 years and thousands of miles of sterling service . The question is there are other options like a T8000 " trekking " mech for £25 cheaper than the exact model number . It's still an XT that works with a maximum 36T cassette .

Top Normal spring to select higher gears ?

Shimano compatible Microshift XLE 10/11 speed derailleur for £25.

They work very well.

Advert says...

MicroSHIFT XLE 11 M665M 10/11 Speed Rear Derailleur

I'm sure you can use 11spd rear mechs with 10 spd shifter and cassette.

TBF I've only used it on an 11spd setup, so I may be wrong.

@mboy see that's the problem, that's compatible to a wide range cassette . I need a mech for a 2 x 10 with a 11-36 cassette and I'm not sure that will work ? I've ordered one from BikepartsUK that supposedly should work for £65 XT T8000 as I said.

I've got one of those Deore mechs paired with a 11-46 ( I think ) cassette from the Chiggle fire sale that I took off a bike . I've also got a spare SLX rear mech that ran a 1 x set up as well.Might see if that'll work Usual story everything wore at the same time , I've only just replaced the chainrings and cassette , with hindsight I may have been better going straight to 1 x . Thing is I find 2 X more practical for what I used the bike for .

I'd go down the second hand route, plenty of M780's on e-bay at around £30. We should be using old parts, if they are perfectly serviceable, rather than buying new all the time. The last one I bought had nearly new jockey wheels on it, so well worth the money.

I agree to a point about 2nd hand , you were lucky with your purchase. If someone has gone over to 1 X that's fine but the first one I saw was honest enough to say it needed new jockey wheels . Factor that in on top and you get closer price wise to a new one before you factor in other wear .

The other thing to remember is the mech I've ordered is NOS so was made around 7 years ago and has been sat on a shelf. My mech has done well over 30K miles so it's served it's purpose.

Got a new unused 780 XT mech at home if you’re after one. Away from h9me just now, but back next week.

Can get pics etc then.

Cheers, Dave.

Compatible, yes…

But not specific to…

You can use a closer ratio cassette with a mech capable of taking a bigger range cassette with no problems, you just adjust the B tension screw to suit…
