Has anyone found a good replacement for the above rim? I put 2 dents in mine yesterday which has been the first significant damage they've suffered in nearly 3 years.

Hunt have offered me a replacement for £60, which I'll still need to build up myself. Thinking of cutting my losses and swapping it for an XM481, they have an ERD of 601 Vs 604 for the Hunts, so will probably need new spokes. Any other rims with an ERD the same as the Hunts?

What route did you take in the end? I'm weighing up options after finding some dings in my trailwides. Interested to hear if the DT rims worked out.

I replaced my Hope 35W's with XM481's and used the same spokes. Can't remember the exact ERD's but they are different, however, no issues so far.

Impact tests for aforementioned wheels. Not a lot in it Trail Wide V2 vs. XM481.

That's handy info! I'm on the Trail Wide V1 which came with my bike so looks like there are several better options.

I wonder how much difference in ERD is too much. I imagine a couple of mm is ok but beyond that and new spokes will be required.

@bikesandboots

That test seems to run against internet wisdom of the DT being much much tougher that the Hunts. Is the v2 trailwide much better than the first one?

I had Trail wides (V1) and they were shite. Dented badly whilst subject to mild riding.

I swapped the rims for an EX511 rear and XM481 using the original spokes without any issue!

Much better rims than the Hunt fromage frais originals.

Even the Hunt graph suggests XM481’s have a higher threshold before they’re damaged enough to end a ride. Anecdotal evidence suggests the Hunt rims dent / ding more easily than DT too.

I’ve smashed my XM481’s through all sorts of clumsy manoeuvres and they’ve just come back for more. Generally run exo / grid weight tyres and no inserts. Only time I’ve run inserts is with really quite light tyres - so a 2.6” grid slaughter and a 2.6” exo Forekaster as they felt a bit flimsy.

Touch wood no dents / not a bad weight / were easy enough to build as the rims started straight. I know when I’ve built with wtb i25’s they haven’t started life quite as straight and were a bit more time consuming to build as a result.

I was quite surprised to see the Fortus 30 scoring so highly, better even than the EX511.

Yeah but it weighs a hell of a lot I believe so it should do. I’d still take the ex511 everytime over the Hunt or Hope rim options. If you want stronger - I’d go for the DT FR560.

I wouldn't read anything into that test. It isn't that realistic.

I get a few months out of trail wides in Scotland. Have to use enduro-wides orfortus30! I barely feel the difference.

I've got Fortus 30 on my heavyweight hardtail. I think i've done at least 3,000km on them across three frames. Have taken a battering but have barely needed truing.

They weigh almost as much as my car wheels though 🙁

When I chose them it was a toss up between the Hunts and the Hopes.

I took Hunt up on the offer and fitted a new Trail Wide (I think it's the V1), plus Rimpacts. Discovered the spokes were too long so fitted nipple washers when I rebuilt it.

When I smashed my TrailWide rear rim I used Hunt's crash replacement scheme to get an EnduroWide front as it has the same amount of spokes and is a slightly burlier rim I believe. Paired it with a Rimpact now, so hopefully no repeats. Fairly sure my wheels are the TrailWide V2s though so not sure if they're exactly the same.

I pranged a Hunt V1 trail wide without really trying in 6 weeks from new. The bead on those is really thin and it folded over completely. I bent it back and there are stress marks all the way through it. Took them off and rebuilt with Stans Flows, which despite their 'bad press' have served me well since their mk3 release.

Seems like Hunts version of trail riding might not be the same as mine.

I'd try the Hunt v2 rim for £60, if it's the same ERD.

The v1 rims were famously fragile, but they genuinely seem to have addressed the issue.
