Looking to replace the rear derailieur on my partner's GT avalanche...the alivio that I'm putting on has a 5mm longer cage...will I need to lengthen the chain to accommodate this??

Very unlikely.

Put it on and set it up as normal.Put it in the smallest sprocket. Change into the big ring. Move it into progressively bigger sprockets until in big/big. If it seizes up or refuses to do it then the answer is yes. For 5mm the chances of it being a problem are very remote but best check it as above in the work stand before riding.
