I am looking for a cheaper alternative than goretex pateches to repair some trashed bits of clothing - mate of mine suggested 'tenacious tape' and that looks like spinnaker tape to me...

whats the collective advice?

Try seam grip. It's worked for me with tears on pertex & eVent. Most outdoor shops seem to sell it.

When I lived in Austria we always used to use Duct Tape and iron it on (with a tea towel over it)

Doesn't come off even when washing, if you use some decent tape (rather than the cheap own brand stuff.)

I still have a jacket with a patch on the back, and it's been on 15 years !!
