Hello,
I have bought a new scott scale moumtain bike and component by component i have been upgrading it and making 'the ultimate bike' for me. I have already upgraded the tyres from 2.2 ikons to 2.3 high rollers. I particular want the carbon bars because after riding my friends hardtail with carbon bars i noticed a huge reduction in vibration in the handle bars and i then did some further research and found that this is a common thing om carbon bars.
My next upgrade is the stem/handle bar combo.
I really like the look of the hope carbon bars how ever i am not a fan of the am fr stem that hope pair i with. I am however a huge fan of the renthal apex stem.
My question to you is id it possible to run the renthal apex stem with hope carbon bars or are they manufactured specific for the renthal fatbar?
Its just i would hate to spend 140 pounds on some handle bars to then see them break.
Has anyone got this set up?
Thank you
Jack
They’ll be fine, just make sure you match the sizes (31.8 or 35mm)
I run the hope bars with a Bontrager stem. As long as the stem is 31.8 it will be fine. I don’t think hope do them in 35mm.
Have you tried the hope bars. They are pretty stiff.
Those Renthal Apex stems are very prone to twisting on the steerer.
I've never had one but I've got two mates that got rid of them. Torqued correctly by people who know what they're doing, you can hold the wheel between your legs and turn the bars.
Has anyone else noticed that?

I noticed they mentioned that in the Unno review on Pinkbike today. I had an earlier Renthal Strata Duo stem which never slipped but creaked so badly once it got dirty.
Jack. They should be fine. I would make sure you read the installation instructions for the handlebar clamp. Due to extent rod the clamp radius you have to gently slide from narrow diameter section of bar to centre section.

Not me. Been running them for nearly 3 years with zero issues.

Hmm
For balance I've fitted the same Apex stem on three bikes and it was virtually an interference fit on the steerers. Push it down verrrrrrrrry slowwwwwwwwwwly and just the slightest nip of the bolts to keep it in place.
By the same token the styling and colours tend to make it look like a stem with a bike attached.
I've used Apex stems since they came out and never had any bother with twisting either.
Be careful assuming that all carbon bars are created equal if you're looking to inject some 'give' into your front end.
Thomson are as stiff as alloy bars, ime. Crank Bros have a lot of give in them. I've no experience of Hope.
I love my Renthal Carbon bars. Used to run them with an Apex Stem and had no issues what so ever, but now run them on the Bontrager Stem.
If you want carbon bars with a bit more give then take a look at the On One Knuckleball in Chewy flavour.
I find them more comfy for my soft joint (non plated) clavicle break.

I've recently put one on my bike too, and that was very much my experience too. In fact it was blinking difficult to get it on the steerer.
