I hope to be heading up that way for a week soon and I'm looking to do a bit of CX training (well the new season is only 4 months away!)
Would either of these forests be an enjoyable blast?
I'll be taking in the local bridleways too so any recommendations would be nice.

Very much so, tunstall is muchos fun although you really need someone with local knowledge to show you round.

I've raced xc and ridden my cx round there and the xc made it more fun

EDIT: have a look at the trog website for group rides

Great! Thanks Flange, just what I was hoping.

New 10 mile singletrack circuit in Tunstall. Reckon I'll be giving that a go then!

:0)

There was a discussion about this on the TROG forum recently. Consensus was that CX bikes are a bit long in the wheelbase for a really good time around Tunstalls very twisty singletrack. Many have tried but reverted to XC machines after a while. Rendlesham has loads of bridleway to link up if you want a more relaxing day out.

Would usually take the XC bike but will be doing some road rides too and only have room for one bike for this trip. Hope to see some Trogs in the woods next weekend maybe. :0)

The usual Viking trail is signposted now so easy to follow. Plenty more trails if you want to explore. Easy to link bridleways & cheeky trails from there to Southwold. 🙂

Was up there last week, rode the msg course and some trails with some trog lads. I was on the hardtail but everything we rode would have been do-able on a cx bike I think. Plenty of gravel fire roads aswell if you like that sort of thing!

I reckon both would be perfect on a CX bike - yes there are some proper drops/bombhole areas in Tunstall, but mainly it is sandy, bumpy forest road and lovely singletrack.

My old Niner was lovely round the place.

I enjoy a pedal round there when we visit relatives in Tunstall, great with the kids. A proper 'go and get lost and see where you pop out' place.

This sums the place up to me:

You will be fine on a CX bike at Tunstall. I can get a tandem round the Viking Trail OK so no propblem with a CX bike. There's about another 20 miles of singletrack there if you can find it before the bracken takes over. Head south from the bottom of the VT to find another loop (unmarked). If it rains, leave it 24 hours for a dry trail to appear again. The bomb holes are just off the trail so keep your eyes peeled. I should be there next Sunday morning for a ride so might see you there on either a Lapierre tandem or a polished frame HT. If you start from Sandgalls car park (Trail Head), the easiest way to get back if you're off-pisting is to just head north then turn left when you hit the road. If off-pisting, please keep off the heathland sections this time of the year as the birdies are starting to nest and the RSPB will get upset.

Make sure you follow the way-marking arrows: towards the end of section V2 where you come to a fire road make sure you turn left and go up the hill rather than straight over following the singletrack. We are due to dig-in an extra post there next month.

Well what a great circuit that is! Rode there this morning and had a blast.
Really grippy and you can take all the corners as fast as you like. I didnt find
it bumpy at all. It may be flat but its got so many smiles per mile. Well done trogs!

Glad you enjoyed it I was there this morning with a group of 8. Must have missed you as we also did a load of the off-piste stuff. The trail was running the best it ever had today.............just enough dampness to keep the dust down.
