I have a Raceface Evolve crank.
The second big hex plate bit that makes it self extracting is buried somewhere in trailside mud.
I don't have a crank tool that fits (mine are smaller, left over from sq. taper cranks) and no LBS near me has the tool either.
I live in Thailand so can't easily order the RaceFace bit nor the tool.
Can I remove the big bolt holding the crank on and use the BB to push the crank off?
Thanks
Yes you could do that - depends on the strength of the BB though as to whether you will just crush the BB or pull the crank off. You may be able to pop a coin in the cranks to beef up/widen the SQ taper crank puller. IIRC 2 * 5p did it for me once, not sure how what Baht coin would be the equivalent!
In a word. No.
As with any cranks it's only really advisable to remove them in the correct manner - in the case of RF that's either with the bolt and self extractor cap or a crank puller.
Without either of these you're going to struggle to remove the crank without damaging it.
We can ship a bolt/cap to you from www.silverfish-uk.com if required.
Actually Bens right - I'd forgotten that. A conveniently sized coin can be used to increase the diameter of a square taper crank tool.
Careful it doesn't bend and damage the threads in the crank though.
Thank for the replies.
I think I may order that bit richie (thanks) but to the UK. I have family coming over in December. Otherwise, it will be an expensive bit after postage.
I've used the coin method before but it's not the 'pushing' part that's too small. It's the bit that screws into the crank to keep it there.
In case anyone was wondering or in the same position.
I removed the tightening bolt from the cranks. Use a BB wrench to undo the BB, pushing the crank out a little. Retightend the BB and put some coins between the BB and crank arm for spacing. Undid the BB again and the crankset popped out. BB bearings are fine.
Easy peasy (but have the proper removal cap on order now).
