Hi.
I’m using my car for transporting my bike to and from trails. Is there any downside to removing both wheels to get it in the car. I’m worried taking axles in and out may mean they may become less effective and it’s not best for threads on axle or frame etc. I always try to keep clean and grease and torque to spec. Many thanks.
It's a faff and increases the chance that your derailleur or disc rotors get bent. But it's not really a big issue. I've never heard of through-axles getting worn out from overuse. It's just not a thing 🙂
Just don't leave your through axle at home or the trail centre!

Sounds like you're already ahead of the game there. I wouldn't worry.

I put it to the gentleman that he has never had the misfortune of using certain Maxles, with their cheesium ends that get cheers up due to the stupid way they tighten. Other than that, never had a problem.
Soft alu threads can wear over the years.
Always return the axles to the frame. Leaving wheels & axles behind either before or after rides is common within my peer group, but we are dorks, you may not be.
I've been doing it for years without issue, although with QRs - none of your fancy modern axle standards here.
Might be worth getting a wheel bag & I find one of those chain keepers helpful, although not sure if they do them for non-QR?
I've always had front wheels out but not rear. There is no appreciable different between those axles after several years.
Thanks all.. I was worried Igbo the threads become weaker and more prone to loosening the Korey are undone and tightened again every time I travel. Many thanks
Don't overthink it. Just make sure you tighten to the correct torque. And as a couple of folk have said, pop them back into the frame loosely before popping in the car. I had to borrow one from thre wonderful 18 Bikes in Hope when I left mine on the front wall at home!
Mine threads into the replaceable drop out on the rear, so worst case, new axle and drop out. Frame would be okay though.
That’s what was worrying me. My rear axle threads directly into frame.. didn’t wanna mess those female threads up by constantly taking wheel on and off.
I doubt there will be any issues with repeatedly taking the wheels out.
It is a long drive back when you get to the trail and remember the front wheel still balanced against the wheelie bin at home...apparently 😉
It's how i transport my bike, both wheels off and in the boot, rest goes in the back seat, making sure not to get the mech caught on anything, or the levers for the brakes accidentally get pulled.
Haven't had an issue in years, even when i stick the bikes on the back of the car i take the wheels off to reduce the width and overhang, as others say though, stick the axles back into the bike, otherwise easy to misplace, and i find undoing the brake caliper bolts a little to realign when putting the wheels back on also helps centre them properly.
