I have a Truvativ Stylo 3.3 crankset and I'd like to know how to remove it so I can replace the bearings. Do I need the 16mm allen key and undo normally (i.e. anticlockwise)? Or is it different to that? The 8mm bolt doesn't seem to want to move at all.

If it's like my Firex then you just undo the 8mm bolt then waggle or whack it with a rubber mallet.

Give some welly....big hex wrench. The 16mm is the self extracting bit.

so undo-ing the 8mm hex key bolt will push against the 16mm hex key ring and pull the crank off. Is that right?

more or less, but rubber mallets are your friends with these!

rubber mallets - is that to give the crank a bit of a whack so it comes off the spindle and then to get the spindle through the BB cups?

You should not need to hit anything. The arm erith the bolt is self extracting you undo the 8mm onto the 16mm then the arm just falls off. Then the drive side pulls out nice and easy

What tony24 said

8mm is indeed the self extracting bit and will take quite a bit of welly to get it off, if its not been off for a while.

You're supposed to replace the whole BB, but you might be able to get away with servicing the bearings but they're tricky to get out.

Good luck
