Removing tape/ residue from frame

A while back I put some clear gorilla tape on my bombtrack hook extc frame to protect it from rubbing when using bags etc. I did a pretty rubbish job and am using different bags now, wanting to clean the bike up.

Trouble is I can't get the tape/ residue off easily/ at all. It was the clear gorilla tape and it's tough as hell. Where I have got it off I've now got residue with lots of dust stuck to it.

I've tried wd40 and some boot cleaning alcohol that I had in a spray but it won't budge it. Tried hot soapy water etc...

It's a matt finish paint on the frame and I'm obvs keen not to wreck the paint.

Any ideas what might do the job?

Auto glim tar remover is my goto for residue removal on frames. Works a treat as it is designed not to stain or wear paint/metal work.

Isopropyl alcohol usually does the trick.

WD40 or GT85 on a little sponge has never failed for me, that's a weird one, be careful with iso alco or disc brake cleaner as it can start attacking paint as you rub with it.  Hairdryer initially should help get the actual tape off in one.

IPA - as in isopropyl alcohol, not India Pale Ale.

I found swarfega and elbow grease surprisingly effective with some gorilla tape.

Heat and then Tardis or IPA, often found in the shape of nail polish remover in the house.

I’ll hijack the thread a tad if you don’t mind.  Isopropyl Alcohol is my go to.  I’ve ran out though.  Where is best place to buy? Also - in a similar vein, which of these would be safe for removing peatys rim tape residue from carbon rims?  Don’t want to go too crazy with the chemicals I guess? Also, same probably applies with warming gently with a heat fun on low setting which I have done in the past for alloy rim stickers

EBay is your friend. Plenty of sellers selling it in bulk and cheap.

Isopropanol is often let down with water. If you have it neat it is pretty good for this sort of thing. Heat will always help too.

Try applying your solvent of choice with cotton wool balls. I've no idea why but it really helps cleaning sticky stuff off.

Lighter fluid is usually a good solvent. But you need the drip can version not the aerosol.

WD40 points cleaner worked well for getting gorilla tape gunk off my rims.

White spirit is good for sticky residue.
Let it soak a little then go again.

bicarbonate of soda is ace at getting sticky stuff off, the sticky stuff sticks to the bicarb and balls up then drops off. rub on dry with finger or cloth

Warm the tape with a hair dryer (or really really gently with a heat gun) before removing. Ideally keep the bike in doors the night before so it's warmer.

I clean the remaining gunk off with brake cleaner.

I’ve got a can of brake cleaner/ carb cleaner but that sounds a bit harsh. Will try the heat up method and some of the options above. Cheers!

cleaned bike yesterday ( whilst this thread was attracting posts) and peeled another bit off but came off cleaner than last time but still gunk. Soapy water still not working on remnant gunk from last wash.

I bought some gtechiq tar and bug remover...it's a car product and is genuinely amazing at removing anything sticky..

I had tar on my car for ages..the product just turned it into goo and it wiped away..

Works fab for tape and glue too

Citrus cleaner is the best I’ve found for removing adhesive residue.
