I've removed the 42 outer ring and will be using a 34 or 36 (can't remember) middle with bash guard. How many links should I take out the chain - I assume simple maths would provide the answer ie 42-36 = 6.
Am I correct?

I'd just do the 'wrap around big ring and big sprocket without running through mech and add a full link' approach [url= http://www.parktool.com/repair/readhowto.asp?id=26 ]details on park tool[/url]
not sure you can equate chain teeth to chain links like that.
