Is there a knack to it or a special tool? Doing a bike split on my pace but I didn't install it so I've no knowledge of how it went on and don't want to damage it.

There are a few types - the Lite & the Threadless ones will unscrew like a star nut using the 4mm allen key on the EDC tool, or any other long allen key
The older one is threaded onto the steerer, unscrews with a cassette tool, no real knack, just a different type of bolt, but same as tightening any other headset
Ah, sounds like the latter. Cheers mate, got all the bits for that.
Didn't work when I tried, my cassette tool seems a mm or two too small. Any other ideas?
Or if there's just an easy way to remove my forks?
Do you have the EDC multitool?
If so, this can be used to tighten and loosen the threaded cap.
It's a normal cassette tool if you have the splined cap. If the cap has no splines then look underneath for a bolt, unless you have an EDC stem with preload in which case just take the stem off. The tool itself can be used on the splined cap but be careful as easy to mash the cap this way.

Nothing on the tool can undo it.
Basically I've got a blue cap that's very similar to a cassette tool, then a spacer, then the stem and under that nothing but a rubber cap which I've removed from the underneath.
Sounds like a different cassette tool needed. The EDC does have a rool for it but you'll struggle to open a properly tightened headset with it

I have two cassette lock ring tools and both fit though.
Do you have a freewheel tool rather than an hg cassette tool? Cheaper cassette tools are often actually for freewheels, they look pretty much like a freehub tool but are slightly undersized and don't work on an edc top cap
Bought a new cassette tool and it just isn't budging. God knows how the previous owner tightened it!
To fit them as you probably know the steerer is threaded. I would recommend turning the fork upside down and getting some anti seize / lubricant down there to try and reach the thread.

That's really odd, that thing is preaload for the headset so if it is done that tight the steerer should be well hard to turn!
Or... its a steel steerer and it has reacted with the AL oneup top cap.
