I have a couple of dents in my rims.

What's the best way to remove them before I set about re-truing them?

Is there a tool for this?

The dents are in Mavic XC717 disc rims.

I use an adjustable spanner with some card between the flats on mine.

Try and get it right in one go rather than too much waggling about as that might end up with the rim cracking.

adjustable spanner IMO. Not really needed IMO unless you are running rim brakes.

EDIT whether it will crack depends on how far bent it is IME.

put up with it..so long as the wheels still reasonably true.
i'm guessing the walls have folded in slightly?

I'm a clumsy bugger and for a while ran 717's on both bikes.
They did'nt used to last long with me riding.

Here's a pic of one of the dents. I've got 3 in one rear wheel and 2 in another rear. All are about the same level of badness.

Is this too bad to ignore? Is it worth straightening?

It won't give you any problems but should straighten easily.

Modified an adjustable spanner specifically for it, ground the tip off one jaw to sit on the shallower inside of the rim, and radiussed the tip of the other to prevent it digging in/marking the rim wall.
