There are regulars and then there's the big hitters, whose paths you don't want to cross.....

what are big hitters?

They either have an opinion on everything and will shout until you've given in or they simply can't help themselves and have to have input on most threads.

The first lot are [as said] just bullies, the second are OK but you do wonder how on earth they'd survive if someone took the internet away

Remember they are all just internet bully's though, so don't take it to heart.

What about the medium hitters?

well, if theres BIG hitters, it stands to reason there must be other categories of 'hitters' too?

Just dont mention the [s]Edinburgh[/s] toothpaste defence

Another month and you will just know, some regulars stand out, others don't, Some have multiple accounts, some don't, some have the magic "P" others don't.

I think its quiet nice not to have a post count on your profile.

Always wondered where I fit into the hierarchy. I'd class myself as a regular, but rarely stray onto the chat forum, so don't tend to get involved in the massive arguments! Never been banned either.

Big hitters is the name of a group that thinks it's superior, but in reality it's a club for soggy biscuit players.

Class.

I think I've been on the verge of Hitting Big but hopefully recognised the signs in time.

The Edinburgh Defence gets used a lot on internet sites but I've never seen anything to convince me it's particularily used by Edinburgh Big Hitters...

I would say I'm in the same boat as njee.

*waves*

what other people think is a different matter...

I wouldn't like to try to list the big hitters, as somebody above says pretty soon you will just know.

If you want to become a Big Hitter, follow this helpful guide:

1. Select a topic, any one will do, but preferably you should know little to nothing about it.

2. Do not read any of the posts, instead, skim over certain key words which make you angry.

3. Immediately post something which is only vaguely relevant to the thread topic, but is wildly emotive and hugely predictable (it helps if you've already adopted the same stance in other threads, check the Daily Mail comments section for good examples)

4. Copy the text you just posted in step 3.

5. Don't fully read any of the replies after your post, again only a glance at random words taken completely out of context will be sufficient.

6. Paste the text you copied in step 4. Add in a couple of points of anecdotal evidence, and maybe a few exclamation marks.

7. Repeat steps 5 and 6 until thread is locked.

Congratulations, you are now a Big Hitter.

Its a generic insult used by posters to insult folk who have an opinion different from theirs. It is used to attack the person rather than their argument. It is fair to say the average BH will articulate it ad nauseum and rarely back down.

usual suspects is used for left wing variations
Swivel eyed loon for right wing ones
Tin foil hat for conspiracist ones

PS DS is one, al is and I am a usual suspect [ sometimes called thought police]

GrahamS you are more of a big hitter on specialist issues but you fall down on being largely reasonable and informed.

The term was first coined on mlehworld, not here, but it does refer to the same forum contributor.

I'd say more like the playground bully's hanger-on who so desperately wants to be hard and feared but is actually rather pathetic

Er, no it wasn't.

TJ Defence, probably, but Edinburgh Defence was coined by me, during a Cynic Al vs TJ bitchfest on here. 😀

So there.

A bit like the school playground bully.

The only difference being that they were the ones who were bullied at school.
