As per my post. The reggae music I know and love all seems to be dated from the 60's to the 80's (Toots and the Maytals, Gregory Isaacs, Mikey Dread, Jimmy Cliff, Black Uhuru, Third World, Bob, Bunny Wailer, Steel Pulse, Misty in Roots, Lee Scrath Perry, Ken Boothe, Marcia Griffiths etc)
Are there any modern equivalents (if yes recommendations please)or is it all now the more aggressive dance hall stylee?

It's evolved, like the rest of us.

I too have evolved: into a bald, overweight, hairy and wrinkled version of my former self.

I blame Charles stupid Darwin...

There is still some out there "roots reggae"

Some of the old stagers are still recording, some new folk record in a roots style

Ritchie spice is one name to look out for

Been wondering the same thing myself, as I haven't found much of the current stuff stands up (though despite the rampant homophobia, I find myself listening to Beenie Man quite often)). Instead I've been trying to expand my taste by listening to some of the less famous stuff from the 60s and 70s. I can't stop listening to / laughing at King Horror at the moment...

fadda - what has it evolved into?
Cheers TJ, just found Richie Spice on you tube. I still see the odd "old timers" gig - seen Toots, Third World Sly & Robbie & a few othersin the last few years, I just wanted to see if there is anything new out there................

Mr Agreeable - you have posted a perfect answer to the OPs question - What happened to Reggae!!

I was going to answer "It's been raped wholesale by crappy black-american rap/dance/gangsta sh*te". Your video is a great example of what I mean. You'd never have heard Bob Marley or Barrington Levy coming out with that bollocks.

Poisoned, just like all the other good music there used to be.

Cocaine thats what happened...

Anyway some modern stuff I like:
On-U Sound, Ghetto Priest, Adrian Sherwood, Stone Love Sound System.

The NAS/Damien Marley Album is a good un, saw them live in Glasgow recently, gig of the year so far for me.
Easy Star All Stars are good as well they did Dub Side of the Moon, Sgt Peppers Lonely Dub Band and Radiodread, surprisingly good live band as well.

Also Marleys Welcome to Jamrock is worth a listen, theres also a rarities album of his thats floating about the internet thats worth tracking down.

crappy black-american rap/dance/gangsta sh*te

Roots Manuva American eh?

Where do you expect Reggae to go? It's a very formulaic sound. UB40 pretty much killed it.

I grew up with Matumbi, Steel Pulse, Aswad.

Cheers all, just got back from a quick local ride, looks like I have some listening to do!
Dez b - you can't say UB40 killed reggae? Or am I missing something?
(and Bagariddim and TheUB40file are classic albums IMHO)

While I sit here contending with this cheese on toast. I personally feel Roots Manuva is an inspirational encapsulation of where we are today. Capleton does some fantastic soulful rootsie stuff. Try his I Testiment album

And there speaketh a man who is stucketh in the past.

'Stucketh'

I think this is a proper word, and I like it. 😀 I shall use it henceforth.

Forsooth, Good Sir; for thoust be nought but a bounder and a cad, and be verily stucketh in the past!

Using the letters "IMHO" on a music thread is a little pointless, do we not think? 🙂

Axeman, you sound like a right miserable old fogey. And rap artists "stealing" from reggae artists? It works both ways y'know. 😉
