Has anyone just cut the spring to reduce the travel of coil forks and did you die? I'd like to go from 170mm down to 130-140mm or so.

You cant do that as the fork would still extend to its full length when the wheel left the ground or dropped into a dip/hole. What fork? Generally travel change involves shifting some spacers around (or adding/subtracting them) if designed for it

I'm betting a set of 350s To.

In theory it may be possible though if my fork guess is correct then not they can't be. I'm a old set of Z1 Bams that were 100mm you could up them the 130mm by putting a shorter negative spring in and adding a smaller spring to take up the slack on the main spring. So in theory if your fork has negative spring you could lengthen this by the amount the main spring was shortened. I think you want a new spring of the correct length though rather than cutting one down.

Also, if you shorten a coil spring you increase its rate in proportion to the reduction in length. In your case about by about 1.35.

Ok, ta for the replies. I bought some X Fusion Vengeances new and although 170mm would work, 140-ish would be better. I've got some U Turn springs here that might do the job so I'll just take the forks apart when they get here and see what's what!
