Having built up the HT for the winter I kind of forget how less forgiving the rear end is on the old bones!

I moved over my wheels and tyres which is a 29 x 2.25 on the rear and think my wheels can turn up too 2.6 (Bontrager Comp 30). Will need to check frame clearance but think be ok.

So looking for a pair of 2.6s for light trails, bridle paths, mixed conditions.

Thinking maybe XR4s or Forekasters? What others worth looking at?

If you can track down the Terevail semi-slick, it's good. Fast rolling but still has a reasonable amount of bite in the mud

I have vittoria mezcals in a 2.6, yes they are comfy but at the first sign of mud the traction disappears.

The 2.25 on the other bike has much better grip if a little harsher.

If you're going for a 2.6 make sure its got blocks of tread that have bite

I’m running a 2.6 xr4 - it’s good for the most part but don’t let it anywhere mud. Despite the blocks it’s pretty skaty on the front! As 2.6’s go - i do t mind it. Just be aware of the limitations.

I’ve got a big betty 2.6 on the back of my hardtail. Super trail casing is a decent weight too. I really like it but wouldn’t consider it fast rolling.

I like the 2.6” Forekaster on the back of my hardtail (27.5x2.6). I run it all year round for a mixture of riding. Either run a dhf or magic Mary upfront depending on the tube of year.

Next summer I’m considering trying a 2.6” slaughter on the back - it’s got a little less volume probably - but will be faster rolling.

Yeah, there's a huge lack of 2.6 29er semislicks, I think the Terevail is the only one? Bizarre tbh

I ran 2.6 Mezcals all summer on my hardtail - I’d not use them in the winter as they’re awful in mud.

I've got a little used se4 (xr4 with tougher protection) in 2.6 that I might move on. PM me if interested.

Have had a spesh eliminator 2.6 on the rear of my HT and never bothered with anything else. Year round and it's excellent

OP wants winter / soft condition tyres. Hill Billy seems like a sensible front suggestion.

Vigilante 2.3 on the rear, High volume, more like a 2.4.

Could go light casing, High grip?

Clear well.

Forekaster sounds like best bet 2.6. No personal experience.

Anyone running 2.6 on 29mm rims? I could
Look at 2.4-2.5 as long as they come up to size.

The Ardent is 2.25 and does seem to Tina little narrow.

I run 2.6s on 30mm rims. 29mm would he just the same.

Previously I said:

Got Rekons.
Lovem.

Need to caveat this with the feedback from yesterday's ride.....
They are utterly useless in the mud.
Completely.

I'm running a maxxis dissector 2.6 on the rear that is great, rolls like a dream with great hook up. I do need a 2.6 Assegai for the front if anyone has a decent one kicking about surplus to requirements?

Lots of support for Hutchinson Griffus in 2.5 on here, might be work checking them out too.

I tried out my new 2.6” 29er Hillbilly yesterday at Rowberrow (mendips) and the thing is so good in the muddy slop it’s untrue. Almost like cheating. It is a big tyre though and I wouldn’t want to run around the road much on it. Front wheel.

Rear I was running a 2.3” dhr2 3c exo - which didn’t do a bad job - I consciously wanted to limit rolling resistance whilst still getting some braking and drive. The 2.4” dhr2 is much bigger / slower in my experience.

Still think the Forekaster isn’t a bad shout for a 2.6” tyre that’ll roll ok but also does a passable job in the mud. I slogged through all sorts of crap last winter with one on the back of my hardtail - riding on road to the trails. Did have a 2.6” magic Mary on the front though for steering through slop and giving some good braking traction.

I think my biggest issue is the terrain. Start on tarmac, head over some loose stuff, then some more smoother bridle paths then on to some more muddy rooty trails then same in reverse.

It’s defiantly a mix of terrain!

I don’t think I would even make it off the tarmac using single speed lol
