Need to put my bicycle in for replacement of press-fit BB bearings, and fork service - both of which are beyond my toolset and skills. Which shops in Glasgow area have best mechanics?
I normally put my bike into gear of glasgow, gibson street purely because its nextto the uni to get anything done that I cant do myself. fitted my headset and BB when I built up my frame.
Willy Bain
Gear for me too - I do most of the stuff on my bikes myself but whenever I don't want to spend a fortune on specific tools for certain jobs (or admit defeat with others) I happily hand it over to them.

Buying tools, learning how to use them, and sending the fork off to tftuned/loco etc is likely to be quicker and cheaper. And more satisfying. And less likely to result in gears that don't work, mysterious scratches on stanchions, chips on frames and inexplicable delays. And finding new and inventive ways to charge more money.
+1 for Bike Love. Carl is a good egg.
And less likely to result in gears that don't work
Funny you should mention that...
mate 1: bike in for frame bearing change, comes out without a single indexed gear.
me: bike in for frame bearing change, comes out without a single indexed gear.
mate 2: gets new wheel built, on the first ride (which was only Mugdock) wheel loosens off to the point of being unridable.
This was all from Bike Love
Not sure of many shops that service forks inhouse so be a lottery for servicing there's Dales,Bikelove which I was impressed with a raps quick turn around on a job Dales wouldn't touch for a week.theres a new bike shop opened in Clydebank called Cycle form, guys name is Duncan, very decent bloke and used him a few times as has most of my riding mates
Willy Bain has the best reputation particularly amongst roadies although im not sure if he services suspension forks.
Perhaps surprisingly i've had good service in the Evans store in the city centre - they sorted some persistant issues i had that a couple of other 'proper' bike shops couldnt. Price matched the parts needed too so it worked out reasonably cheap for the work done.
A friend has given up on willy bain as he's failed to properly tighten a BB 3 times.
Gear are usually v expensive.
Forks I'd always send off to windwave, loco or make the trip to Flotec.
For general stuff (and perhaps forks?) you won't get better than Back on Track, AND he's mobile. http://www.backontrackrepairs.co.uk/
Thanks for all the tips - will check out Gear and Bikelove. Any thoughts on Clarkston Cycle Center?
Alpine at St George's Cross have decent mechanics now.
I have been into the Clarkston place a few times but they don't seem to cater for higher end MTB market
Never had any mechanical stuff done at Clarkston (does seem more roadie oriented) however I had some rust on an old steel road frame repaired by Alex Cross(?) there recently - he used to build frames (Rattray's?) & is apparently well regarded in that sense - it's now freshly powdercoated & looks like new, so if anyone needs any metalwork done I can defo recommend them for that.
glasgowdan - MemberGear are usually v expensive
only had BB and headset fitted and their prices did seem any different to other shops I looked at.
Cyclelane in Clarkston are also pretty good.
Sorry, my comment above re willy bain is wrong, it was Billy Bilsland

Indeed - saying 'Willy Bain' only helps of anyone knows who / where Willy Bain is. The shop is bicyclerepair.co.uk on Pollockshaws Road. Its a repair/services business only, not a bike shop that also has a mechanic.
