I've been doing a lot more road miles of late and my knees are starting to give me a little problem. can anyone recommend a knee support for the moment until I can get to the route of the problem?

M

Mueller Hg80 is a good hinged one.

Cheers

+1 for the Mueller HG80. Hinged for best support or cheaper version with a wire spring. Make sure you get the size right - you want it snug

Also tried the equivalent Donjoy. Cheaper but not as comfortable and bulkier

How do you know a knee brace is the right thing to help with it?

Get professional help, don't wear a knee brace.

As said above, you need to get professional help.
I was like you years ago, bought cheap knee brace, then bought a better one ...etc .. years later and knee is well and truly feked and I need an operation to sort and have a full on donjoy atm to stop it constantly dislocating.
I also find kinesiology tape works on the road bike, but need the proper support on the MTB.

As above - you need to know why its hurting (fwiw I have no acl in either knee, various other issues. I wear a brace to keep my knee stable when the muscles are tired, not to majically "stop it hurting"). I suspect some physio and specific excersizes will help you more than a brace.

Mrs FD is an Orthopaedic Surgeon, and I couldn't believe how many permutations of support there are, when they should be used, shouldn't be used etc. A knee brace/support used incorrectly can do more harm than good.

Go and see a physio initially. They are great for muscular / soft tissue injury, however that is also their limitation too apparently. ie they tend not to look at mechanical issues.

Got a similar recently appeared problem and sought professional help. Doc just gave me heavier duty painkillers but on second visit referred me to physio who gave me exercises. Have a second appointment with physio soon so intend to ask for some kind of investigation. I understand NHS have to ration resources but my problem has not gone away. I did try one of those straps that fit under the knee that a mate who is a fell runner recommended which helped a bit but didn't remove the pain

seen lots of recommendations for the mueller but is it comfy for cycling and does it stay put or is it a constant source of irritation ?
Also ..my arthritic knee pain seems worse when walking a few miles ....is the brace good for a hike ?
thanks

Totally comfortable for cycling. I have used it on every ride for the last 10 years and do not notice it at all. I also have arthritis and joint instability and could not walk in the hills without it - makes a huge difference, especially on the descents

As mentioned above you need to see a specialist to determine what is causing your knee pain. The choice of knee support on the market is huge and they provide support for different symptoms.

I have 2 Össur CTI supports that have kindly been provided by our wonderful NHS (thank heavens at £489 each) to alleviate the pain I get from osteoarthritis , I'm a postie and wear them for work and also when riding my bikes.

My first diagnosis was that I had stretched MCL's and it wasn't till they did some xrays 6 months later they discovered the cartridge wear.

As all the above, see a specialist first and foremost. I have a full on Donjoy that I used to use when I rode DH, but it doesn't see much use these days as it's not comfortable enough for general riding. I have the Mueller HG80 mentioned above to use day to day, it's pretty comfy for longer rides.
