I'm going to buy the Aeroe Spider with pannier rack for my Shan.

Don't want huge things - nipping to the shops, but maybe the odd little bike packing adventure. Must be waterproof and look reasonably nice without costing £££ - say £100 budget tops

ease of taking on and off - Ortleib.  if you want to leave them on mostly then Carridice IME  Both do a small pannier

Ortlieb stuff is great. Ive had a few bits and borrowed my mates small ortliebs for a trip last year and they were spot on. I have a few old school cotton carradice bags which I love but not sure about the modern style ones.

Yes I used them as rear panniers on an Ortlieb Quick Rack on my Rome to Home trip in October. Worked well, didn’t break or leak, typical Ortlieb stuff.

Want to buy my Ortliebs? https://flic.kr/p/2nW6sMf

Front Roller City in black. They work fine as smaller rear panniers. I’ve gone to Arkels.

I prefer the look of the Gravel Pack tbh, but thanks anyway

Gravel or singletrack?

From experience Ortlieb are great as panniers on gravel, having taken them on not particularly gnarly single track, I'd want something a bit more securely secured if I were doing it regularly.

I used those gravel ones last year for a trip. Worked really well and felt good quality. I'd happily buy them.

Don’t want huge things – nipping to the shops,

Does not compute. Ortlieb and a quick rack if you want to remove the rack.

Small front rollers plus (these are the fabric feeling ones 'Sport Rollers' they used to be my front panniers on my Long Haul Trucker) - to turn them in to 'Gravel Spec' then just add a second lower hook (easy to buy as a spare) - rock solid when all adjusted up even on proper off road (though think the OMM axle mount rack helps and it makes a Tubus feel flimsy..)

DONT buy Thule Pack ones.

Mine are very durable, superbly waterproof, great size, nice colour, really reflective....
....and have a shite mounting system. They use a magnet below and a small rotating hook at the top. While very quick to load and unload they are wearing much faster than the bag and now bounce off on rough ground...

Ya, Ortlieb - there's a reason nearly every single long distance tourer uses them.

Got some 20l (Front Roller), 40l (Back Roller) and 70l (f@cking big Back Roller) in PVC and the lighter fabric.

All axe. Just miss the outside pockets of my old (pre Ashley) Karrimor's. 😐

The week spot on Ortliebs is that the place where the black plastic at the bottom of the pannier and the bottom of the material eventually wear through. This is after years of commuting and shoping.

I've pretty much settled on the Ortlieb Gravel - can be had from Rutland Cycles for £95, cheaper than anywhere else I've seen

I've just noticed on the Ortlieb site that they seem to have updated them - 2 x 14.5l and 37cm tall, rather than 2 x 12.5l and 30cm tall. Can't see them for sale anywhere apart from the official site for £140.

So users of said panniers - would you go for the slightly bigger new ones, or do you find the older ones the perfect size?

Ortlieb are great but I prefer soft bags for proper offroad.

I have ortlieb c 25 years old, was going to upgrade them but leaving bike at gym and shops didn't want to leave shiny new panniers on.  Old ones don't get any attention.  I put big tote bags inside so I don't have to remove panniers, just use the tote bags as liners.

Ortlieb

Did the Torino - Nice rally route last summer, which is about 40% offroad, and they were brilliant. Tough, waterproof, good design. Worth every penny.

Ortlieb Gravel ordered - the newer 29l, rather than the older 25l

Aeroe Spider Pannier rack to mount them on. Will post pics next week.

It's getting expensive repurposing my 26'er - want matching bar and frame bags next - another £260
