This time of year I'm getting very cold feet whilst riding. This is particularly noticable where the SPD pedals connect to my shoes/boots. I'm thinking thermal conduction through the shoe to the pedal and great big heat sink that is the bike. I'm already using winter boots + neoprene overshoes so the top parts of my feet are toasty.
Has anyone found a solution?
flat pedals, plastic ones. and warm boots. columbia fairbanks are awesome.
I've got foil, or better, an offcut of silver house wrap under thermal insoles (cheap eBay), as well as the usual good socks, and it's helped a lot.
Oversized Lake mx303s with two insoles.
Oh, and don't do your boots up too tight.
All the above - I’m in some chunky Northwave boots, with room to move my toes around, and some fleecy insoles that I stuck some silver reflective foil to the underside of. Keeps my horrendous circulation at bay for most of the time.
If your shoes are the "right" size then putting in a thick, insulating insole is going to make them tight and will result in cold feet.
By far the warmest footwear I've tried are the Bontrager Old Man Winter. These are a two -layer boot with an insulated inner boot. They take a MTB style cleat.
Tons suggestion of plastic flat pedals and the Columbia Fairbanks boots is an excellent one if you don't need to be clipped in.
Also, make sure your shins and calfs are covered, else you'll never have warm blood in your feet.
Trousers.
Aerogel insoles? You could also stick some of that reflective foil stuff they put behind radiators under your insoles - but it really comes down to more insulation so bigger boots with enough room for a thicker pair of socks if you really want warmer feet in cold conditions.
Felt insoles from ebay.
There was a huge thread about this a few months ago.
Woollen insoles are very nice. Bigger footwear, flat pedals, keep you core, arms and legs warm.
Eat a bit more before you go out so you have a bit more fuel in you to help.
I fing hate cold feet and thanks to my diminished circulation they're cold even when inside in a warm house.
I for a while started putting heatpads around my ankles to help heat the blood(narrowing of artery in upper leg) working on the premise that warm blood flows better.
Whether it actually works i could not say,in that that is the problem and my solution is the solution, but it does seem to help a bit.
Maybe on a particularly cold day and in conjunction with better insulated insoles.
Failing all that hot socks or even electrically heated insoles. Plenty of those on the market and a range of prices from cheap unlikely to last through to pretty expensive designed for motorcycle or mountaineering use
I suffered from cold feet whilst riding and in particular it appeared to come through the cleats. Switched to flat pedals and no more problems- cheaper and more simple too! I don’t find any problems with plastic road cleats (Shimano) so can only presume it was the metal conductivity. Hope this helps.
Thanks all - does anyone know where there are any aerogel insoles in the UK?
@zerocool - can you post a link to the previous thread please.
Flats. Bin off MTB specific shoes - get proper walking shoes (not boots) and Brigdale socks.
With that combo I'm happy at freezing even with soaking feet.
