Need to order myself a set of tyres. Appreciate its a subjective topic but give me some options
The parameters - UK trails centre, 650b, tubeless, Banshee Spitfire
Cheers!
Stock answer.
Butcher front, Slaughter/Purgatory rear (conditions dependant).
Butcher front/Purgatory rear - I've ridden Spesh tyres for years and leave them on all year. There's a reason it's the stock answer.
Just taken off and replaced the stock HR II's that came on my Capra - felt like constantly riding in thick mud, even on tarmac, but now feels like a different bike
Interesting Reading, I've been riding MAXXIS HR2's for the past 10 years at least and i'm finding them a bit of a chore, The Butcher looks similar to the HR2 but the rear is obviously where i need some help so looking at one of the two mentioned above with the lower centre.
I need some advice on the following though, I run dual ply HR's for Peaks and lakes and the Alps, so they stay on all year for Local stuff and Trail Centres, Which one is this comparable to in the Spesh line up? Should i ditch the sidewall carcass protection and just run lighter to assist with my weight reduction and "Ahem" lack of pedaling prowess on the comedy 30T chain ring.
Any advice appreciated, Sorry for hijacking the thread but was gonna ask the same question but daren't
Thanks.
In terms of tread pattern (IIRC) the Butcher is a Minion and the Purgatory is a High Roller - all designed by the same guy?
Grid will give you the toughest Spesh sidewalls, followed by Protection.
Cheers, Thought the Butcher looked a bit High Rollery, Thinking of Purgatory on the back just for sheer rolling prowess, I need all the help i can get. Admittedly we have just had the 3 Days of summer but it might see afew dry days between now and Autumn.
Thinking GRID for rear and a normal Control for front?
Also have a look at bontrager XR4 or SE3
I use the Control casing front and back for Peak and trail centre (mostly BPW) riding and it's fine - I ride heavy too, smashing my way through rocks on a 170mm bike . Whatever they may be compared to, they weigh less, roll better and are cheaper than most tyres - especially HR's
Grid carcass great. Been riding Peak with Onza Ibex too, but sidewall not as strong as Spesh grids.
If you are in Peak/NW and fancy trying the spesh out cheap....I have a pair Specialized 27.5 tyres - both grid carcass, both 2bliss and 2.3 width. Butcher used one ride only with tube, Slaughter used for late summer/early autumn last year and was fitted tubeless with sealant. £30 pair. Apols for high jack! Spam!!
Liking some of the new maxxis offerings too with the DD casing. Aggressor could be a nice sturdy rear tyre..
SSSSHHHH< I've got about 4 pairs of HR's and at leat 2 sets of Minions, All in 26" Roll well and 1 careful owner.
@ STR Are they alright down Hagg Farm descent & Potato Alley? for cuts etc?
Running with WTB vigilante TCS front and trail boss rear on my FS and they are great. Traction is good and no probs despite me battering them. Previously run HR2 and agree about draggy plus you need to ove drifting while leaning over! Have Minions for winter on the HT and love those so did wonder about the SS version for the back end.
Would recommend nextdaytyres.co.uk for anything other than the Spech or WTB.
