What's good at around 200 notes?

Currently on Fulcrum Racing 7s but they're on the heavy side and the hubs are a bit ropey.

Racing 5's, Aksiums or RS30's. Tough price break

If I go to £250, that gets me a pair of Ultegra 6700 in grey from Merlin (colour not important). Sound like a good deal?

the pro lite ones are apparently excellent for the price, but think they're more like £350.

£350 is stretching things a bit far. Thanks for the advice anyway.

Are those Ultegra 6700s tubeless in the "MTB Tubeless" sense? If I get some tubeless road tyres add some stans I'm away?

If you could be bothered, for £250 you could get those cheap super light hubs off ebay, a set of stans alphas (or velocity aeroheads as a cheaper option) and some spokes from actionsports.de and get them handbuilt.

You would then end up with a a very light set of wheels, and as stiff as you wanted.

If it were me, I'd save a bit more; wheels, apart from the frame, are prob the most significant upgrade one can make IMO. Cheap roadie wheels flex loads on climbs, esp. if your a hunky chunky type.

It's definitely a case of you buy cheap, you buy twice here...unless it's for a commute hack etc.

I'm not that keen on off the peg, but if you can get hold of an older (2003/4) set of Ksyrium SSC that have been looked after then go for them.

I worked with a lad who was in the GB roadie squad (northern chapter) who raced on them...i road his race bike and it was stiff, no flex under load.

If your gonna be racing, then save up a bit more.

🙂

Cheap =/= flexy.

David speaks sense BTW, esp if you go tubeless, there's a bit of effort involved but it's light for the cash and tubeless rides lovely.

You can't go far wrong with Shimano RS80's for £300 quid at Planet X.

I have the Shimano Ultegra's (Merlin £230ish last year) and they are stiff and light enough for me 82kg.

I'm a scrawny bastard (65kg) and not a racer so ultimate stiffness isn't an issue. I'm looking for a decent lightweight wheelset (tubeless would be a bonus as I'm used to it on MTB) for Raid Alpine in July and the thousands of miles I need to get in between now and then.

Lots of good ideas so far - thanks guys.
