Having just knackered a set of wheels I’m looking to build up a new set from the old hubs. Rims can be pretty specific I know, but I’m after a relatively cheap, light and strong rim to build onto a set of Pro2 hubs. Most of my riding is XC to enduro. I guess I’m asking for a rim which is a jack of all trades really. Any suggestions or experiences (good or bad) with particulars rims welcome. At the moment im looking at Mavic 317s (cheap) or possibly 321s (a bit heavy though).

P.S. this is going to be my first attempt at a wheel build so online tutorials and info suggestions are also welcome

cheap, light and strong
pick two.

stans crest sounds like it would fit your description, or a flow if you were considering 321s.

My first build was with Crests & I've since done some DT rims too. The DT's were eyeletted and could take a higher tension but overall I was happier with the finish of the Crests.

For instructions part with 9 quid for the Wheelpro book. Well worth it.

I've got a pair of white flows you could have for £85

Mavic EN521, stiff, light(ish), cheep, strong.

Stans' don't like high tension, and in general it's better to have too much than too little, so without a tension meter I usualy go for 'as tight as my last pair + half a turn'.

DT convert to tubeless easier though IME, so maybe 5.1's or E550, my x470's converted with just electrical tape and some 2bliss tyres.

Rims and spokes are cheep from rose bikes (spokes arround half the price of UK stockists).

There's a free guide on sheldon brown's site which was easy enough to follow.

Sheldon brown is where I learn't. Good idea is to have a wheel sat next to you for reference. And dont take shortcuts. Slow and steady wins the race 🙂

317s are a peice of pee to build. I'd go with them. I've built a dozen or so wheels over the years and the easiest ones were the last ones - on 317s*

* Alternatively, this could simply be because of all the experience gained building the previous wheels on different rims 😛

Thanks for all the help folks. Im considering extending my budget a little and going for the crests.

Clobber, id have taken those flows in an instant if they were black. Damn it!
