I'm looking for a replacement for my old chamois padded lycra shorts; something with better padding. And maybe the option of hip protection.
Giordana from my local roadie shop was pretty good, but I understand that there are mtb-specific shorts.
Never felt the need for bib shorts as none of mine have misbehaved.
Can you suggest something for all day in the saddle?
Bibs, no matter how good shorts feel, bibs feel better...
Thanks but I don't think bibs will feel better on the saddle which is where I need some padding...
What's your budget?
My Endura MT500 bibs are my favourite, I've got Galibier, Lusso, DHB and Howies which are all comfortable. I only wear bibs, though.
I think I like the Btwin chamois pad that decathlon sell the best , 900 maybe? Cant quite remember I have it in my Bib's but will purchase the same pad in shorts soon. I don't find that bib's are better for me, but that pad is my fave & the £39.99 bib is a steal imo.
Thanks for the suggestions.
I'd rather not pay more than I have to, but if they're more comfortable, I'll spend a bit more. Last time I got a pair of Giordana road shorts from my local bike shop which were pretty good, around £50 I think. They also carry Assos which look very nice, but at a price.
Apparently road and mtb pads should be different, so thought I'd look for an mtb-specific pad this time. The Bt'win ones look good value; the MT500 have some hip protection which is a plus.
I recall the Morvelo pad got a good write-up on here, on the bibs. Apparently the shorts use a different pad.
I recommend what I always do, 700 or 900 series stuff from Decathlon. Nice pad, very comfortable, wear OK and a very nice price. The 500 series stuff is not bad either I'd go for the more expensive stuff if you can as it's a good step up. They do shorts and bibs, I'd always go bibs but there are shorts if you must.
Endura bibs all the way for me, for on road and off, although I try and buy them when they're on sale. Pretty much haven't got on with any other brand, ever. Having said that, I'm tempted to try the Decathlon stuff, as @lunge has mentioned. No idea about hip protection though...
My fav budget short is Pearl Izumi Select.
I paid £30 for mine and even though I have about 5 other pairs of various brands, I always go back to these as soon as they are out of the wash!
They seem to have stopped showing the pads on their website, so it's hard to see which of their current range is the same as mine 🙁
I've got a few pairs of these from Decathlon. They are only mesh, so cannot be worn without baggies, but they have the same pad as the £40 900 bibs. And only £20! (Used to be £15!)

For Lycra shorts I always buy the DHb ones which are £30. Ridden for 3 hours in them ok on the road - but can’t comment on all day comfort.
I’ve got Enduro humvees with the clickfast liners for off-road but they aren’t as padded as the DHB. I definitely wouldn’t recommend them for an all day ride.

If you're wearing baggies over the top look at the Zipvit bibs for £40. by far the most comfortable i've worn. I've tried buying them from the italian manufacturer under their own brand and they would cost about twice the price Zipvit sell them for.

Just ordered a pair of those after your recommendation. My humvee inners don't seem to like my rear!
Decathlon padded shorts arrived today.
Looks good, will be trying them out tomorrow. Hopefully will help the LITERAL pain in the arse I have riding at the moment. 😃
Got a pair of Decathalon 900 gel shorts for £20. I'm at the upper end of medium and had to go up to large to get a fit. Also a pair of Montura Dacite Cilista shorts for £70 which use the EIT Mtb3 pad.
The pad in the Decathalons is pretty large and didn't conform to my body, so I feel like a badger with the pad hanging down when I walk. On the bike it's comfy and great value.
The Montura is much better built, fits better and works well.
I prefer the Montura but Decathalon is a steal.
