Just pulled my bike out the shed for a clean after a ride on Thursday evening.

got most of the way through and discovered i've got a broken spoke in the rear wheel, Disc side, by the hub. Now, i've not clipped anything, hit anything etc, its a stress break and on closer inspection other spokes look on their way out.

not surprised, wheels are a good few years old and have been hammered across a couple of bikes (stans flows on Hope Pro4s) so i've dodged a bullet by just a single spoke failure right now.

Got a trip to Bike park in 3 weeks for a weekend of uplifting and a jump course for a laugh. Todays discovery make me not want to use these wheels obviously!

Rebuilding isn't really an option at the mo as all local shops are booked out till end of September. So, it looks like its new wheels time.

Any recommendations for some decent "enduro-y" wheels that are not too heavy and Strong (note i have not broken the rule and asked for Cheap as well...) Not bothered by carbon, I want decent quality and available of the shelf above all else. Budget - £Whatever within reason.

Fancy a change from the usual noisy Hope hubs, no matter how well they have served me over the last 2 decades, would like to use the opportunity to have a bit of peace and quiet.

If it helps focus the type of recommendation, bike is a Trek Slash C frame built up for all round use, i'm 6'2" and 95kg, so need to be strong! boost fitment front and rear, old school shimano freehub.

and.... GO!

DT Swiss 240/350 hubs on a DT rim (XM481) to suit your needs with.... DT spokes & nipples.

Just get a DT wheelset that comprises of the above, you won't go far wrong.

Gotta agree with wzzzz, if it's the first time you've snapped a spoke just get it replaced and the rest of the wheel tensioned up (it's really not that hard once you get a feel for it) and save you bare pennies.

Later on if you want a new hub, get a shop to build it into the wheel and you should be able to sell your pro4 for maybe £100 if it's in good condition.

Check the rim for cracks but if ok, replacing spokes yourself is easy enough.

I have just got a set of the DT Swiss EX511 on 350 hubs from fitwheels.eu. Arrived yesterday so have only had a little spin around the street but they seem to be well made. Spoke tension is even and they came already taped for tubeless.

I've built wheels before, just haven't got time to do it right now. Replacing the spoke is not an option now, I've just given the wheels a through inspection and the rims are starting to crack on the spoke holes on either side of the broken spoke, checking the front thoroughly as well and it looks like it is "just" starting to go in the same way around a few spoke holes.

So, its definitely new wheelset time.

I'll keep the hubs and have a go at a second wheelset over the winter.

How long did they take to arrive from ordering?

If you can get DT Swiss EX1501’s they’d meet the spec. EX511 rim is really strong and not too heavy and you’ll get a good DT Swiss hub that will probably outlast a Pro4 before needing maintenance and is a bit quieter without going the other way and being too quiet.
