I picked up a cheap Carrera Subway for town/pub/very light gravel duties, it's currently got some slightly knackered Marathon tyres on but I want something a bit bigger. Any suggestions for something that is cheap, about 2" across, good for town/light gravel, and ideally tanwall?

I’ve used a pair of DMR supermoto’s on my towpath/pub bike. Not you usual “gravel bike” tyre, but the work!
Picked them up new from eBay a few years back.
Edit: new improved!!

hmmmsubways don't have that much tyre clearance in my experience (of two) are you sure 2inch fits?
Big apples are surprising capable until it gets muddy for whats basicall at 2inch+ slick
but supermotos always look ace...
Just put some Maxxis DTH in tan wall, 2.15 inch I think on the commuter. Very nice and quick rolling.
Schwalbe Billy Bonkers fit the bill. And they’re really light.
Halo Twin Rail?
Used to run Halo Twin Rails about 15 years ago for my road/gravel commute on my MTB. You know before gravel was a thing 🙂
I've also used schwalbe marathons on the same route and they were more puncture resistant, in my experience. It's amazingly refreshing being able to just cycle through broken glass and hawthorn cuttings without having to worry about puncturing.
Schwalbe land cruisers are pretty good, don’t think you can get them in tanwall, though.
New Schwalbe Hurricane is worth a look. I'm not sure what width they come in at on the 26" version though. Not tanwall either I don't think
Got Halo Twin Rails on my pub hack

I've used Conti Town & Country in the past. They're alright if slightly odd looking tread. Like nuclear waste they seem to last a while too 😏
SJS cycles has a spread of this type of touring/gravel tyre with various options from 26 x 1.75 up. Might be a good source of inspiration. The full fat 2.0 is more challenging but if you can manage to lose a quarter of an inch...

Ardents
I have some on my general purpose bike and they roll pretty well on tarmac, grip on gravel/ foot paths/ bridle ways except in deep mud. Only thing you have to watch is the gap between the mid blocks and shoulder on the 2.25 version.
I've currently got Schwalbe Big Ben's on my hack bike. Work well but tan all over rather than walled. Also available in off white or boring black.
