Hi
I am running 12 speed Eagle on my Transition. The mech got pooped the other day (I think I clonked it) and I had to change my mech, as it was twisted. It was cheaper to go for XT rear mech & SLX shifter, than just replace my GX mech. So I did that via the LBS. They have kindly tweaked my indexing a couple of times, but the chain & casette are worn (I have put 1,000 miles on it) and not sifting that great. New chain & casette time?
If I am replacing the casette & chain, am I best to go for some more SRAM stuff, or try some Sunrace combo? It has to be XD to fit the freehub, which rules out going Shimano.
What hubs? Why not micro spline and SLX? Same price of cheaper than GX to start with, then way cheaper.
Either another Sram cassette or change the freehub to microspline and get an SlX 12 speed cassette. That probably works out the same as it cheaper than buying another gx. The pull ratio or gaps between cogs is slightly different between Shimano and Sram so the Shimano cassette will probably shift that bit better than stam with your mech and shifter. I’d run a Sram chain though - I’ve found the Shimano one noisy and prone to skipping when you get mud in it - swapped to an XX1 chain and it’s much better.
Hi Teethgrinder. I could not get the microspline hubs for the wheelset I have (Hunt Trailwide). So I could only do Shimano 11sp or XD.
How resently have you asked hunt?
I mucked up. Ooops. You could get both XD & Micro. But I cocked up and have now bought an XD hub, as I had an XD cassette (which is now all fitted). Maybe I should have ditched the SRAM stuff, got a microspline, new Shimano casette and chain at the same time.
Face palm.
But I think the SRAM Eagle casette & chain has some life left in it, so maybe punish that some more this winter and keep the new part as a spare (for as long as I can, at these prices).
When I've changed GX chains on my GX cassette it's always slipped in 4th and 5th highest ratios. 30mm of round chainsaw file in an electric drill and reprofile the teeth, and job done.
