In England or Wales, must have a suitable gradient, ideally a first ascent but open to all options.

.... it's for a friend.

ideally a first ascent

I think you will find that 99.99% of all paths, trails and tracks have been ridden by bike in Englandshire and Wales....

depending what you mean by off-road (and first ascent ?) I'd pick a nice consistent fire road somewhere and then ride down the trails next to it for the repeats

There's rules about Everesting, the hill you ascend must be the one you descend & by first ascent = not previously successfully Everested.

IIRC the ideal gradient is around 7% average.

He has 3 potentials, I'm just fishing around for others that might suit.

you don't have to be the first to everest to qualify.

The first Everesting ride for each climb will be signified by ‘First’ on the hall of fame (or First* if you Everested at the same time as more than one other rider). Copied a ride that someone else has done? It absolutely still counts in the hall of fame

still nice to do though

There's a tool on the Everesting site where you can check a given Strava segment where it tells you how many reps you need to do and the cumulative distance as well as whether it's a good candidate.

I'd look for a reasonably steady climb but one with a variation in the gradient just to try and exercise different muscles.

Here's Ian Barrington's account of Everesting the Devil's Elbow -  https://ianbarrington.com/2016/08/01/everesting-the-devils-elbow/

Isn't one of the self imposed rules that you can do a loop if part of the climb is one way. In which case I'd vote for Cwm Rhaeadr, technically as part of the trail center you have to climb the fire road and descend the singletrack.

Even without that it's a nice easy climb, about 200m and I did it four or five times on the singlespeed without really noticing.

The problem with that suggestion is that the downhill at CR is so enjoyable that I finish panting and hanging over the bars. If I was everesting I’d want a downhill that didn’t use more energy than the climb. 😁

One on my patch - Cam High Road from Gearstones near Ribblehead. About 2.5 miles and 800-850ft. Smooth and graded for the most part, quite a bit of variation of gradient, probably 7% to start.

Plus some lovely views of Ribblehead Viaduct, because it's all about the views, really!

For extra misery, do the first climb at Llandegla again and again.

I had no idea there was a site for this and rules. I thought it was something people did to amuse themselves.

Having done a few now, I'd aim for an average of 10%, a fairly constant gradient, and a descent where you can just let the bike go.

Our last however ticked none of those boxes. 😉

On I've looked at near us is Chew Rd, though you'd have to borrow a key for the gate.

Top section at Llandegla - first part of the descent with the berms, you can then climb back up the fire road and repeat

I'd try and chose one that wasn't in woods then at least you have some views.

This is the segment  https://www.strava.com/segments/2383992 Martin's mentioned but there's a couple of gates on it. There doesn't appear (yet) to be a segment from the bridge at the bottom to the first gate.

Sticking in the Dales:

This one's a bit steeper -  https://www.strava.com/segments/13796556
This  https://www.strava.com/segments/1148149 is the singletrack up to Weets top
There's one up on Barden Moor from the east that might be suitable.

One thing you (or your friend) might need to consider is having refreshments to hand - the road based ones park a car up on the side of the road so that they can grab drinks, food, clothing, etc as and when they need them.

How about Cam High Road from Bainbridge in the Yorkshire Dales - 2.8 miles, 819ft, steady 5% gradient

36 ascents required. You need to pick your day carefully - it's straight into the usual wind direction.

Oddly enough i got the KOM on this back in 2012 with 27 minutes, now it's been bettered by almost 10 minutes!

The Barden one I don't think will gain enough height, and features climbing on the 'descent'!

I wasn't thinking of the full climb from the road but from the bottom of the dip about a mile along the track. If the descent involves a bit of climbing then that counts towards the total. Not a big help on Barden Moor but on some road climbs there can be ten or fifteen metres of rise that you can use your speed and freewheel over it effectively getting that ascent for free each lap.

Height gain per lap is a matter of balance: too little per lap and you have to do lots of laps, too much and each lap is either too hard or is very long. 100m ascent means 89 laps remember.

Mastiles Lane might be a candidate (140m ascent) but since I only clean it roughly one in three goes it's a bit tough. Fremington Edge would be similarly too hard.

@christhetall - suggesting The Roman Road is just cruel!

https://www.strava.com/segments/2062631 ?

~522 feet gain per climb (according to Strava route builder) over 1.2 miles, ~8% gradient.

Or just go do something fun instead. Sounds like a very dull challenge.

Bit old hat too, a local lad 'Olympused' his local climb by riding it 51 times (21,287m).

Loop out BPW? Up the uplift road, down the blacks as they're the straightest line to the bottom. 😉

You have to descend the same route you use for the climb unless it's a one-way system - that's for road, not sure about off-road as I don't think there's anything illegal about going the wrong way on a trail centre. Might be stupid but ...

Oh, you have to ride it all so no walking.

I fancy having a go at this, I've got the ideal hill behind my house, 100 reps and that's a mountain climbed
