[Closed] Recommend me a XC/trail lid that's cooler than a Bell Super 3

As above. Sweat was pouring off my head yesterday in muggy weather, albeit on a fairly strenuous route (decent hills). I was using a Bell Super 3 mips which felt like a tea cosy.

Any recommendations for a light and airy helmet for XC/mountains (not "gnar" - that's what the Bell Super is for)?

Thanks all.

Specialized ambush, previous model. I was having the same issue with my giro and bell lids. The ambush is a massive improvement. No more sweat pouring into my eyes.

And they can be found relatively cheap. I got the comp model for 50 odd from evolution bikes.

Unfortunately Spesh have gone down the (now common) route of a fixed peak high up - to accomodate goggles (or look cool?)

It renders it useless for keeping the sun out of your eyes and (on my head) doesn't look cool at all - tried one on at JE James and it looked stoopid

*edit - just seen you said previous model

Giro Radix - massively cooler/more vented that the older Giro trail helmets (Montaro, Hex etc)

Well happy with mine. Always had a Giro shaped head but found them sweaty.

Riding with one since January, can't believe how much more confortable and well ventilated it is compared to the typical trail/AM lids I had before.
Also very well scored in the Virginia Tech ratings

Thanks for the suggestions. I’ll have a look at them in more detail.

I came across the Endura Singletrack II which looks very well vented. Anyone got one?

I have a POC Tectal that I use for xc rides. It is light and comfortable and a really nice fit (for my head at least).

Another vote for the POC here, bit spendy but having tried various Spesh and Giro it just fitted my noggin well and was super comfy.

They vary alot even in the same name for various tech bits so shop around.

I'm sure it's passed all it's certification, but it doesn't look like it offers much protection

We've a few Leatt helmets, various MTB 1 and MTB 2.

They are well made, comfy and "just work". Noticeably cooler than the Giro's we've also got.
Only criticism is that one MTB 1 doesn't have adjustment at the ears, only chin strap length. The others do though.

I'm another who just picked up a previous generation specialized ambush. It is hugely less brow sweaty than my giro chronicle or TLD A1. Does feel a bit less complete in its coverage. Only a couple of rides in but am impressed so far. I've a spesh/giro/TLD bonce, which I think means kind of oval (and in my case massive).

Comparing them side by side the same gen tactic looks almost identical in vent design, but the sizing range is slightly more limited.

Thanks all for the suggestions.

I like the look of the 100% Altec and the Leatts. The former are reduced at Merlin right now.

Unfortunately, I'm not sure that my head fits with the Spesh mould from experience.

I agree, the Singletrack II looks pretty minimalist in terms of protection. It is on offer at Balfe's for 35 quid (blue XL) if anyone is interested.

Love the look of POCs but they are a bit pricey.

I find the Kask Rex really good, it isnt XC designed, but has a light feel, lots of air holes and a lovely italian lether chin strap!

I've got one and it is indeed very well ventilated, very happy with it.

I run hot and sweat profusely, and notice a lot less sweat dripping into my eyes on hot days.

I wear the full face (MET Parachute) for gnarlier rides, but the endura has been great for xc/trail/commuting.

Scott Arx - lightweight, tiny (removeable) front peak. Very well ventilated, I've not suffered neck drip since getting one.

I'm also fancying something a bit cooler than my Bell Super DH for warmer days.

Anyone any experience with the Fox Speedframe?

I have a Speedframe, it's a really nice helmet, well made, comfortable, decent vents. I still sweat a lot in it on hot days.  I bought as it came out well on group tests venting wise (the older Ambush seems to be the top choice but I didn't like the look of it).  I'm resigned to the fact that I have always run hot and a lack of hair means I have nowt to soak it up!

I've also had a Bell Sixer (another nicely made helmet), Bell Super, TLD A2, IXS and these have been no better or worse.

My best vented helmet is my POC Octal that I use on the road (miles better than the previous Kask Mojito), but even then on a hot day I'm streaming, I now wear a Halo headband to counter the drip into my eyes.

I've just ordered a Speedframe Pro ^^ on the offchance that it suits me (had a Fox Flux a few years ago). Not sure what the difference is between the normal MIPS and the Pro - mostly looks like the liner.

Rutland Cycles have it @ 30% off and a further 15% for orders over £100 at the checkout - £150 helmet for £89

I really liked my Flux - unfortunately it was the helmet I was wearing when I came a cropper and bust my jaw, hence now using the Super DH (and Super 3R before that). If I know I'm not going balls out though, I'll wear without the chin bar, or potentially the helmet I've just bought if it's any good
