My FS 29r is Currently on WTB i23 rims with MM 2.35 tyres. Works fine but i think it might be time to go a bit bigger as befits current trends.
So whats the go-to wheelset for STW aficionados of peaks / lakes type riding? I'm assuming an id of 35mm and 2.6mm tyres is the order of the day? Not interested in going down the high end carbon route due to funding and ive read quite a bit on hunt being a bit crap in the other thread.
Well, if you want alloy 35mm, and not Hunt, Newmen wheels seems the way to go.
A few years ago a German magazine tested them, and they withstood more abuse than a lot of carbon wheels in the test.
They are also light and fairly decently priced.
Pinkbike had a great endorsement of their toughness as well.

You probably have to have a look around at various German online stores to find them.
Does your frame have clearance for that big of a set up in the rear? If it is tight, you might want to limit it to 30mm in the rear. This also helps pull the tread pattern down over the sides, and pulls the sidewalls in a bit, thereby helping to protect the tire from sidewall damage, which is hard to avoid on the rear wheel.
Then you run either higher pressure or an insert in the rear to prevent pinch flats anyway, and that helps prevent tire squirm from the narrower rim.
I’m assuming an id of 35mm and 2.6mm tyres is the order of the day?
The norm seems to be 30mm internal width rims and 2.4in rear, 2.5in or 2.6in front tyres.
I just bought a set of custom Hope Pro 4 hubs with DT EX511 rims for £500 and I'm delighted with them. If you are lighter in weight and/or riding style, the XM481 rims are also excellent.
If you don't want carbon is hard to see past these on ebay at £399 delivered

Have people found a noticeable and worthwhile difference between 2.35 and 2.6 tires?
On the front yes with the same tyre.
On the back still tend to run 2.3 apart from the Turbo Levo that has 2.8 front and rear
